has anyone else cut your rear springs? I cut my impala's and it worked, and then just yesterday we chopped my 9C1's. Just because there a progressive spring doesn't mean you can't chop em. so chop away!
How did you mount the cut springs back in? They aren't progressive, they are simply pigtailed because thats the way they mount, I'd say cutting the rear springs is a safety hazard because they wont remount properly and might fall out, unless there is some kind of adapter you can get to put in there or something.
My first 9C1 I thought the same thing, but I did it to my impala as an experiment and drove it for about 10k mi. like that. Nothing. Nothing ever happened, they never fell out or turned or anything. So I did it to my 9C1 that I just bought last week. I cut 2.5 coils out and when I get smaller tires, Im gonna go for another 1/2 coil and possibly a full coil. People that say its a safety hazard shouldnt put any factory drop springs in at all, cause by there statement if you jack up a car w/ drop springs they fall out just the same as cut springs. The pigtail on top of the progressive spring means nothing in the top mount. The spring will stay just the same. When the spring is compressed it is almost showing a full coil past the pigtail, so by that the pigtail means nothing.
How are you positively locating the spring on the perch on the bottom?
The stock springs aren't progressive, they are linear. They ARE pigtailed at BOTH ends to keep them on the perches (top and bottom) and keep them from moving around. If you cut off the pigtails, you lose this locating ability....
There are "rumors" that there is a perch you can get from something else in a junkyard (Camaro?) that you can then weld onto our axles. Once these new perches are welded on (they are bigger), you can then use non-pigtailed springs in back and be fine with it.
If you're putting the cut part (i.e. pigtail removed) up top, it IS moving around and you may not just realize it. Will it come out? I don't know, but I sure wouldn't wanna find out the hard way
ED,The Camaro pad I think you are speaking of goes on the top. While it would allow triming off coils the Camaro springs were a fair bit smaller in diameter so you would be could not use a "B" coil.
TWOARES, While you might be "happnen" today , think about what your first coil is up to. Non pig tail springs that are used in flat pockets are typically ground flat or at least have the first coil pre flattened. You with your cut open coil end will likly have the first coil crammed down so the second is right on the cut end. Or you will find the first coil swaying sidways to miss the second. Personally I do not think your method is the best procedure but if it works for you today, fine. I would not how ever advice others to do it as there is a very real possibility of your first coil breaking in time from being nicked by the free end or over loaded. I have not even bothered talking about the location deal as that is a given. Good luck. Gerry
Like I said before, I had about 10k mi. on my last impala that I did that to and the kid is still driving it that way since last August and it's still fine. Theres only one way to find out if it's not gonna work, and if something does happen where it drops, I think theres still plenty of room in the rear wheel well to make it on down the road to fix it. If either of the cars ever breaks, Ill post it here first. The only other time Ive been in a car where the suspension dropped, was when I was in my buddies car with bags and the exhaust melted a hole in the right rear bag and it dropped. We were doing app. 130 mph and had no problem getting it to the side of the road.
Twoares - If I understand your position, you are saying your cutting the pigtail end off and leaving the cut end facing up where it contacts the spring posket like it would when compressed.
I don't dispute your experience and you seem pleased the performance and safety of the modification. I would however caution that this is not the best situation. As Ed mentioned this will allow for the possibility the spring could move around if weight were to come off the spring. I would not recommend this as a "best practice".
I have modified some older "A" body race cars with Upper spring perches taken from 64-67 Chevelles, GTO's Etc - they were designed for single pigtail rear springs with the open und facing up and will adaquately retain such a spring. -this mod would require the body lifted from the frame and a bit of welding experience so not likely a popular option - Finding the parts in good condition would robably be a challenge now - It wasn't easy 10 years ago!
Finding an acceptable rear spring in terms of ride height and rate is a challenge with our cars and I have not yet found one I am happy with.
Correct. If you cut only ONE end of the spring, and then make something that will firmly hold the spring in place on the cut end, it should be fine. This is assuming that whatever you fabricate is strong enough to do the job correctly.
Just don't want the cut end to be able to move around because it isn't firmly located.
And Todd, I know what you mean about the rear springs thing
. I currently own 3 different sets of rear springs (Stock SS, 1A2 Wagon, Moog CC507), and am not completely happy with any of them. Stockers are closest to "right" for my handling setup, but still not perfect.
Designing something to retain the spring would be simple, but like you said Ed, making sure it could hold up to the task is another question. I am sure twoares is satisfied with is two sofar, and as much as its worth, I am going to give it a shot as well, but with additional mods in mind in case trouble would arise.
