Dimmer switches are known for going bad over time. In my 90 F-150, the spring heated up, the dash lights went out, and it shot a red hot spring at my foot, and burned the carpet. 
I wondered why you had to have the switch in JUST the right spot to have the dash lights on.
The dimmer switch in these cars, works the same way. Should only be like $15 for a new one.
