just bought a 93 caprice with 99k only issue is the door will not open from the outside or inside need help!

i took off the door handle panel piece and reveals that the rod is still connected to the handle so im lost as what to do next.

since the door wont open im not sure how i would get the door panel off.

please any advice would be appreciated.

That's unusual for both to be inoperable.I've had one or the other but never both at same time.Have you worked the power door lock while trying the interior handle same time?

Worst case scenario is you'll have to remove the front bench seat through pass side then pull off door panel and open the door.Most likely the main latch bracket both handles connect to fell off somehow.

Invest in a 93 GM Service Manual if you don't already have one.There you'll find good diagram pics of inner door latch mechanism.

Thanks for the response. I got the panel off and after investigating the rods are still attached I believe the latch itself maybe frozen rather its with ice or rust idk that's as much as I could come up with.

A local Autobody shop said for $100 they'll come through the back door(they'll remive the door first) and torch(cut) the striker to get the door open but I'll have to get a new latch and striker. What are your thoughts on that.

I do not know where you are, or which front door it is. Have you tried any junk yards?

If you are careful, you may be able to cut/drill the screws from the inside, or even cut the latch apart. Replacing the parts is not a big deal.

Try putting some PB blaster on the latch from the inside of the door, and work the levers. The lock does not release when you pull the door handle, so check to be sure the lock lever is in the unlocked position. A little heat might make it work as well. Try a hair dryer, or a heat gun aimed at the inside of the latch. There is a reasonable amount of room in the door with the window in the up position.

The striker is held on by two screws that are screwed into a trapped plate on the door jam. You may be able to access it if you remove the B pillar cover. Since it is a 93 you will not be able to remove the lower B pillar cover without breaking it. That would give you access to the inside of the door jam. If you can get into the B pillar, you may be able to use a Dremel tool with a fiber cutoff wheel to cut the plate in half, or however it is oriented maybe cut the ends off. You do have to remove the seat belt to get the B pillar trim off. When removing the top half of the B pillar trim, pull the bottom out and then pull it down to get the top clip off. If you just pull it out, you will damage the top clip attachment to the trim.

Just a thought, how cold is it where you live, and is the car always outside? If the car is always outside, and it's been below freezing, it could just be frozen shut. I've had a few so frozen that I barely got them open. Pull the inside latch and give the door a good shove with your shoulder. Just don't break the glass in your attempt... Probably not your problem, but it could be, and is worth checking out.
