Karl Ellwein is the ISSCA Region 12 Director as well as the Nat'l Drag Race Steward. He is wanting everyone to come and take part in Vegas drag racing. If you will post here, he will be responding to you with updates to make the event something you have never seen before!

To raise awareness and to get the juices flowing, he’d like to start a non-smack-talk thread about the Thursday June 24th ISSCA Nats drag racing at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, (LVMS), The Strip.

Where: LVMS, Exit 54 off I-15
When: June 24th, ISSCA Nationals, time tba,
What: ISSCA class drag racing, (Super Sport, Super Natural, Super Pro), and
other fun classes to be invented by comments in this thread.

Background: Karl was appointed by our ISSCA Board of Directors to be responsible for all matters with regard to this year's drag racing event at the Nats. He has quite a bit of freedom to arrange things for the maximum enjoyment of fellow ISSCA members. You might have seen his Impala in the latest Car Craft! He’d like help from all racers right now if you would kindly respond with ideas and suggestions. But please, even though it's fun for a time, we would like all to refrain from smack talk at least on this thread.

ISSCA has rented The Strip at LVMS for an entire day. This actually gives us too much time, (but that is a good thing). There will be plenty of time to set up all types of for fun and interesting eliminations, other than the 3 established elimination classes that you know will always be run at the NATS, (Super Sport--ET Bracket, Super Natural--Heads Up, Super Pro--Heads Up).

What do you think about these for-fun races?
1. Truck Tow Rig Quick 8 (self explanatory)
2. Dial-in Bogey Race (1 round where all will dial-in and the driver with the best package wins---best package is closest to dial and RT nearest perfect without going red and without going too quick)
3. Wagon Quick 8 (self explanatory)
4. Consolation Bracket Race, (for all who raced in the normal Super Sport
ET Bracket Race accept for the winner of course)
5. Best Smokey Burnout!!!
6. All day open fun run lane.
7. Your idea
8. Your idea
9. Your idea
10. Your idea

A few other things he'd like to mention now, although you'll have a firm copy of the event schedule when you show up in June:

Karl plans to have all cars safety teched on Wednesday at the host hotel the day before and then simply spot checked the day of the event.

Tech will be in accordance with general safety rules of N.H.R.A. Please start installing your roll bars and other safety gear if you have a fast car and have been "getting away without it" in the past.

Oh, one last thing, 1st timers or those who might think it will be too hot to race, please attend and run down the strip anyway. There will be press photography and movie cameras and your 2 tons may have its 15 min. of fame. Beginners luck will be with you during eliminations. Mildly modded cars don't come close to stressing parts enough for breakage. The sight of 200 plus 2-ton B-bodies all lined up at the strip is a sight to behold.

never mind.
:D

it looked like it was a blanket ban for the all participants.

the lower class i could see the ban, but it was the big dogs i was concerned about.

I've raced in a bracket where you make 3 runs. You take the lowest ET of the 3 and subtract .1 and that's your dial in for the rest of the brackets. Keeps cars from sandbagging and true consistency and lights wins. It's also done on a pro tree.

Example:
run 1 - 13.56
run 2 - 13.62
run 3 - 13.58

Your dial in will be 13.46 (13.56 - .1)

I like the idea of grudge matches... especially a west coast vs. east coast! :D

Hey guys, I like all these ideas. Let me backtrack quite a bit and mention that when I first called the Vegas track staff they told me our contract was from 9am to 5pm and so I thought we had a huge amount of time. I'm not quite certain why the LVMS account executive told me that but our time is from 5pm to 10pm and that is a much more compact and accelerated schedule.
I indicated that I wanted to do a tow rig race but it's going to be a no-go on that, (no tow rig race). The main reason is that only the designated club cars should be racing, (marquee cars only in other words).
I think we can certainly get a 1 round wagon race in between the elimination rounds though.
And it's a definite on the all day test-n-tune lane. I'm calling that the open run grudge run lane.

I was giving a spendid idea by Harvey Clark on something that should be very hilarious. That would be what I'm calling for now, The 2-Ton-Push-Drag. That will be 1 car, 1 driver, engine off, up to 4 pushers, pro tree, race to the 60'
This will hopefully be a reality because it sounds almost too funny. Start thinking of tricks and tips to get your 2-ton push drag team car down the strip. (air up the tires, find the lightest B-body, find a light weight driver, sneek a few lead bricks into your competitors trunk, oh....did I say that?)

Also wanted to post the rought draft of the drivers meeting talking points right here so that some will see that Alan Cooper and I are continually working on the planning and we are bouncing things off of each other. The notes I'm posting are not etched in stone right now but I think it's good to see.

Vegas ISSCA Nats Drag Racing Driver’s Meeting

• When eliminations begin, the round winner should return to their class lane promptly. Don’t go to the pits unless of course you need fuel or some maintenance item. Round loosers may go to lane 6 if desired for more open runs when time permits.
• If you detect engine or tranny trouble during a run, promptly and calmly pull over close to the wall to minimize fluid on the racing surface. It’s always best to abort a run when something just doesn’t feel or sound right.
• The bracket racing, (Super Sport) starting line lights begin with amber bulbs lighting in sequence ½ second apart, (top-middle-bottom). Most racers launch their car after seeing the 3rd amber bulb illuminate. Some have success launching when they see the 2nd amber illuminate..
• The Heads-Up, (Super Natural and Super Pro), starting line lights begin with all amber bulbs lighting at the same time. This is called a .400 Pro Tree. It’s identical to what is seen on TV for the Top Fuel Dragsters.
• Lane 6 is for open runs and will be “pulled” as much as possible between elimination rounds. Early in the event, the lane will certainly seem like its going nowhere because the actual elimination lanes will get priority. But later in the event, lane 6 will run more often.
• Please do not turn on your air conditioner, even in the lanes or in the pits.
• Write your car number, (ISSCA member number), on the passenger window and rear window so that the tower can see it. Of course make your ET bracket dial-in clear for the tower and write it on the passenger window and rear window.
• The wagon and 2-Ton-Push-Drag will be one round, pro tree, quickest ET wins. (¼ mile for the wagon and 60’ for the Push-Drag). These will be run only if time allows. Hopefully time will allow. Listen for the call to the lanes later in the event. These races could be called at a moments notice.
• The heads up races, (Super Natural and Super Pro), will be run from an 8 or 16 car qualified ladder depending on how many cars show up. It’s important to be in lanes 3 and 4 at the designated times so that the cars can be spot checked for safety and class rules. There will be 2 qualifying rounds. (Target times 7:00pm and 7:30pm). You don’t have to run in both but you do have to run in at least one qual run to be considered for the 8 or 16 car ladder. The ladder is based on ET and not on MPH in case you were wondering. Cars will be paired up according to the qualified ladder. During qualifying, there will be a sort of “race within a race” where the #8 or #16 bump spot is shown on the score board. Racers and spectators will be able to see the target ET for making the “Quick 8” or “Quick 16”.
• The ET bracket race, (Super Sport), will most likely be random pairings during the 1st few rounds and possibly run on a ladder when down to 16 cars. It’s important to get back to the lanes if you win your round so that pairings can be arranged. (Same goes for the Heads Up racers).
• Lane choice goes to previous round quickest ET for the heads up racers. There will be no lain choice for the ET Bracket racers during early rounds. The early ET Bracket round pairings will be random and subject to staging officials who will shuffle the cars by a variety of methods. You may be lined up hoping to get the left lane, but the lane official may shuffle you over to the right lane. The lane officials will be fair and impartial and will try to make the pairings as random as possible.
• If using a ladder on the last 16 ET Bracket cars, then lane choice will be by coin flip between the two opponents. If no ladder is used, then lane officials will decide the lane for you.

Oh man.... bring the EZ ups... not sure which is worse... morning heat or afternoon heat. Sundown should be around 9pm so that's only an hour of relief from the heat.

Anyway to go into the late-night hours? Say midnight... 2am... like on Street Race night?

Will this be bare foot? What's worse, VHT on your feet or throwing away a pair of sneakers?
;)

bwaahaa, Glen, I think we should make the pushers wear flip-flops, and they have to keep them on for the whole 60'
just kidding you know.
Personally, I'd make sure to tie up my laces tight.

I'd also be for this one. It is not unknown at LVMS (aka, the staff has done it before).

Heck, last November at SEMA I believe my last run in my WRX (they had a "Street Grudge Match" night the Friday of SEMA) was after 1AM!
G
its said that there will be over 200 b-bodys there...and the best thing is that june 24 is my b-day   b-body's on my b-day im so cool.. :D ....cant wh8t
G
I'm in, just have to convince the old man to give me a few days off. :D

I think I'd better start practicing....
G
for the push race, would i be able to use maybe my car with the "push bumper" ;) that could make things interesting.

hey Karl do you by any chance know the altitude of the las vegas track. i think that maybe i will be able to run a best "down" there.
G
303 cap : LVMS is at approx 2200 ft. However, with the density altitude that day pretty much guaranteed to be OVER 1 mile high, I doubt anyone (even the CO folks!) is gonna be running a personal best

Keep in mind we run in crappy hot weather that pushes our density altitude way up here too. I know for a fact that I get a lot of SOTP gain going to vegas in my old TBI Tahoe. I'll be anxious to see how the car does there. To beat my personal best on Colo, all I have to do is 15.38 or better in the 1/4, and that was in Pueblo, at 4900 feet.
FWIW,
I ran 14.73 in the 1/4 in Tulsa.
I ran 9.2x in the 1/8 in Dallas.

Nonetheless, I think it's going to be a great night! Again, hats off to the people who set up the scheduling. This should be a lot better than last year's packing up from the car show, and immediately running off to the track, like last year. I think a lot of people were burned out before they made their first pass at Tulsa last year, due to the tight schedule.

Yes, that's what I was thinking at least. Wagons just do 1 run....quickest car is...well...the quickest car. RWYB. Just for fun really. Not for trophy or award. Just a little something special for the wagon's ho!

Will I be able to have a passenger racing with me in the "open lane" or even the bracket racing?
G
Eric, No passengers. If I find out different, I'll post here.
good question though because i know a very few places that do allow a passenger.
Karl
G
Eric,
Karl is correct. LVMS has told me that they do not permit passengers at the drag strip or at the road course. No exceptions....
