OK, I need help. My 96 SS has the visually identical factory AM/FM/CD stereo as my 02 Silverado.

Since the Silverado is now history, I took the CD changer out and tried to install it into the SS today. (What a bitch the SS is compared to the Silverado!)After I got the lower dash & stereo removed I plugged the changer in.

I know I had power to the changer as I could hear it running. However, I could not get the changer to work. No matter how many times I pressed the CD/AUX button it would not operate the changer. Is a changer not compatible with a 96 SS stereo?

With the key off I shined a flashlight into the control screen in the head unit and it had the same "function" light available as my 02 Silverado, (ie: disc # & track #).

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated!

The only radio that will drive the changer is the tape unit. The cd unit will not do it (as you just found out). The nice thing about the tape unit is, you can get a pie adapter so that you can get XM direct injected.

I had the AM/FM/CD and switched to the 12 CD GM changer with casette radio. Really nice to have the 12 CDs loaded. You should be able to find the tape unit cheap and then sell the CD.

Thank you for the info.

Since the AM/FM/CD head unit from a 02 Silverado appears to be the same, can I just plug one of those in and then the changer? (ie: are both units the same size?) Thanks!!
