After about 2 months of searching...I should be picking up "my" 1996 Caprice Classic on friday.

I'm excited...

The Bad:
Small oil leak...cause unknown
Drivers side door woodgrain cracked corner by doorpull
Pass side window falls off track (other 3 replaced)
The usually dings from the trunk clutter inside
Bubbling Tint (who cares)
Thats all I could find

Now for the "real good":
B4U
LT1
KG9-140amp alt
G80!!!!!!! that works, i tested it on freeway...lol smoked em easy
94k
Burgandy/Tan Leather

Heres the kicker...Listed as $3900....He said he wants $2500!!!

I just about **** myself!
I just hope the oil leak is something small

Why would you want to tint your windshield? Thats just an accident waiting to happen, maybe part of it, but not the whole thing. In rain, glare, fog, how do you plan on seeing out of it? Add to that people that dont use their lights, so they are invisible, with a 30% tint, I roll down my windows to double check to see if the coast is clear. One day DRL's will be in all cars, and yes for petes sake, if the car is in park they need to be off!

Only in the twilight times where the sun is coming up or down, during the day its fine.

im not to sure about the caprice with the lt1 but my camaro had a lt1 in it and it was leaking oil from the front of the timing cover, i hear its a common problem on the lt1 camaros.

all i did was cleaed the area real good with foamy engine brite and some carb cleaner, let it dry then blew it out with my compressor, after it was dry i took some rtv silicone and smeared it into the space where the oil pan meets the front cover and let it dry for 24 hrs.

it worked great, and still to this day the car has almost 10,000 more miles on it and no leaks!!

if this is the problem, its an easy fix and it will only cost you about 10 bucks tops.

good luck and keep us posted.

I agree about tinting windshields as a dangerous and unwise practice. It's hard enough to see at night and in heavy rain and fog, let alone snow. It's illegal in CA and makes law enforcement curious and irritated as it is a practice of many of the thugs who occasionally gravitate to our cars.
Congrats on the purchase!

Yeah that is a common problem with some of the L-99/LT-1's, it is generally the front Cover oil-seal behind the Opti-craps
If the car has an Oil-cooler, another common cause of oil-leaks on a small-block Chevy is the Oil-cooler lines. The leak will either be by the Oil filter mounting adapter where the lines connect to it, or the leak can also be comming from the oil-line connection(s) up by the radiator..

well this leak looks like its directly centered under the engine...kinda towards the rear...but not completely under the rear...but def not up front by the radiator or pulley system area

Thanks great info....I dont think I feel like tackling this job myself tho. Does it get pricey when taking it to a shop? Or is it kinda easy enough? I have a FSM, so maybe it will help

R&R the intake manifold isn't hard at all. Once you get past all the extraneous BS (home plate, evap hoses, etc.), it's really easy. Probably a few hours worth of work if you take your time vs. some shop that'll get you for about $200-250 labor or more. Only odd tool you'd need is a fuel line disconnect tool for the lines going into the fuel rail (any parts store, buy the metal tools, not the plastic - maybe $15). The other stuff is standard stuff in any toolbox.

A lot of guys use to tint their front windows around here. they usually uesd as light as possibile then added a dark window strip at the top, to distract from the windshield being tinted. (cops) Im running 15% on mine. its a little dark at night but not bad enough for me to remove it. I still loved your 91 with the wires!
have fun with the new one
