Fuel filler surround removal?

1070 Views 5 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  gbhs72
The gray plastic fuel filler surround on this 94 has basically begun to disintegrate in a big way. I've found another in a local junkyard that's intact but I can't seem to find instructions on how best to remove it without damage. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Please explain what exactly you are referring to or post a pic. The Fuel Filter on 94-96 cars is mounted to the Frame in front of the LR Tire. There is just a Metal Band/Clamp that wraps around the Filter and mounts to the Frame with a 10mm Bolt and Star Washer. Some filters come with a new Bracket and others don't.
Erm, fuel *filler* surround is what I asked about, not fuel *filter* surround.

The part I’m talking about is the gray plastic molded part surrounding the rear license plate and the fuel tank filler on the rear surface of the Fleetwood.
Page 10-8-9 in the shop manual. Looks like you have to remove one of the plastic taillamp housings to get enough clearance, but sounds like it can be done without having to take off the bumper as well. The surround is just several bolts, but its flanges may make it tricky.

The one donor I saw in the yard had a surround that was just about as bad as the one on the car, but there's supposedly others around. Thanks for the info.

One good point is that the left fin on this Caddy needs to be replaced due to someone hitting it with an F-150 in a careless parking lot accident, so removing it to install a new surround will be trivial extra work. Of course, first I have to find a donor - I suspect GM doesn't make this part any more, right?
This will melt some plastic. https://www.ebay.com/itm/93-96-cadi...m=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=m570.l1313&LH_TitleDesc=0

It was the least expensive one I saw just doing a quick check.
