You poke around a while and you'll find a great writeup of the problem, along with painfully detailed instructions on rebuilding the reostat thing on the pump to restore accurate readings.

My Cady is easy. When the top bar goes out there's 1/2 a tank. 1/2 full means 4 gallons is left, and when it gets to 4 or 5 bars I'm filling it from the gallon can in the trunk.

Sure. Except that a new sending unit assembly is around $300 and fixing what you got is basically free. Try a can of fuel system cleaner first and see if that removes the varnish from the sending unit and gets you a better connection.
