In a previous thread I mentioned I am about to upgrade my 20 year old front suspension. I believe I am going with all new upper/lower tubular control arms from Street Trends. Beyond that I am replacing ball joints, tire rods, center lings and idler arm.

Now for the "PROBLEM". Obtaining all the above parts is quite easy, as long as your wallet is full. The major set back is the FOUR bolts that go through the frame for the upper control arms, GM part number 10262655. These bolts are knurled just below the head and are a bear to remove. After twenty years they no longer resemble their younger days!

Without question these four bolts need changing, every where I look I am told "Discontinued".

Has anyone fabricated a replacement?

Any ideas?

I wish I had four of them?

If I recall, years ago there were a couple of gents that was actually thinking of developing a replacement? Not sure if it ever came to be. I have several Chevrolet dealerships that were forced out of business when Chevrolet realigned. I have contacted three in hopes they might find something.

I don't want to invest $1,700 in parts and not have these four bolts/shims/nuts.

If the upper control arm studs don't twist in place when you pull the UCAs off, they are fine. It's actually pretty rare that they would ever need replacement. Also, you may want to consider a different upper control arm to avoid the need to loosen and retighten the nuts every time you align the car. This arm from SPC is fully adjustable for camber and caster without ever using shims. To make it even easier, get the Pro-Lite option.

Also, for extra paranoia, you can tack weld the bolt heads to the frame.

Check this thread for lots of good info regarding removal and possible replacements. Back when I did this I was trying to find a way to get those out since I also rebuilt my Front End along with 5/8" Spindles/Control Arms.

It really does make swapping the upper arms easier if you remove the bolts from the frame. It wasn't that long ago that I did this and just walked into the Dealer and picked up 4 replacements. Shortly after that it appears GM began to discontinue them but if you look at the 1 Post from Mike, he had indicated a few Dealers and their Phone Numbers that had some in stock. Maybe they still have them.

A couple of other options if you look through the thread, you will see where I cleaned up my originals and see no reason why these could not be re-used if I need to someday. Also, Fred had indicated he had some used ones he was selling or he could probably pull some for you so you could try to PM him too. Think there was some info there on possible replacement to the Stock bolts being made.

The Lock Nuts should still be available and it's important to replace those as well. If not, look into an option of the correct Grade and something with the Nylon Locking compount on top. Worst case, you use 2 nuts on each bolt and sinch them down to each other so they won't back off. It's cheap insurance and recommended after removing once or twice since they tend to lose their holding power. If they back out, you have a strong chance of loosing shims which affect alignment or way worse if they come off and you tear up parts/car.

I want to thank you all for the great input. I have "cut and pasted" everything so I can get a better understanding of what I am doing. By the way, I have been in contact with Fred who will get me 4 used one if my other avenue fails.

I have a friend who knows several closed Chevrolet dealerships across the country, some still have shelves full of parts. At the end of today the answer was still NO. I can get the shim and nuts, it's just those darn bolts.

Wouldn't you think one of the companies that are manufacturing the "tubular control arms" would also manufacture a set of bolts?

Keep the advise coming, God know I need it.

That particular part number is discontinued, but I would not be surprised if the frame-side bolts from another application would function as a drop-in replacement. There is also likely something from the service parts aftermarket that will work.

I am very thankful for Fred in Florida who found me 4 bolts that are as near as new as your going to get. I did order/receive 8 new nuts for these bolts from GMC. Thought I would put a set of 4 in the tool box for the future if needed. Of course I will be of such age I won't know what in God's name they are for!

Thanks Fred.
