I just bought a 96 Caprice (former Reno Highway Patrol car with the LT1 engine). The former owner is a friend of mine and has had the car for over 7 years. The 136K mile motor runs strong and the driveline is in excellent condition. The exterior and interior is in need of extensive repair. This car has started the journey to be an SS clone by the former owner.
I will be debadging the car fixing the exterior and will be going with the murdered out satin black look. I will want to go with some engine performance modifications. I am still formulating the plan for the engine. The engine plans will be headed towards forced induction.
My questions are what is the difference between the 96 LT1 engine and the 96 LT1 police edition engine? What are the weak points of the LT1 engine and how much power can be safely added to the stock LT1 police engine? What are the differences in the transmission from the police and the regular auto transmissions?
Additionally if there is anyone out there that has any aftermarket interior or exterior parts please let me know. This car will eventually see the 1/4 mile race track in SoCal. Who has a posi rear end for sale and what kind is the best to get?
Since I'm a complete newbie to this type of car please give me any advise that you can. Remember that the car will be geared towards forced induction, the race track, and still be a street driven car.
