I always thought that the white paste under a HEI ignition module is heat sink compound.
A guy at AutoZone (who has been wrong before, but then again so have I) claims that it's just dielectric grease.
I have heard specifically that it's NOT dilelectric grease. However, he showed me that back of the packaging of dielectric grease tube and it said something like "OEM specified for HEI ignitions". Could that mean specified for the wires? Or is it really dielectric grease and I have been wrong for a long time?

I believe that you are correct and it is important that the heat sink compound be used.

use the heat paste for the module, the clearish dielectric grease is for coil/plug wires.

but if you are working on an gm hei coil in cap system, the rubber washer between the cap and coil is covered with regular dielectric grease when installed.
