I have been noticing that the interior lights sometimes dim when I have them on and occasionally the odometer gets bright then dims as well. I need to get a new battery since it's been 5 years for the last, but how do you know if the alternator is not working or slowly deteriorating as well. Thanks in advance for all comments.

Go to autozone, or advanced auto before you replace ANYTHING. They will test both the alt, and the battery for free.
