Another side note regarding SEO cars... even though SEO do not have a "theft deterrent relay" in the starter circuit as shown in the schematic above, the VATS module is still installed and connected to the PCM. But on the SEO cars, it's left in open (unprogrammed) mode. Meaning it never learns a key. And thus always blindly provides the correct fuel enable signal to the PCM. If you pull the PassKey fuse on a SEO car (#14 on a '94 Caprice for example), and start the car, it will run for a moment and then die as the PCM shuts down the injectors due to lack of VATS signal.

Making an SEO module an option for someone who wants to disable the key resistor but does have the means to turn off vats in the PCM.
The one thing I like about the civi vs SEO is the relay. Although the ignition switch still carries full current , I thing the lag time may reduce arcing and prolong life.
The low current relay side is also a great place for a clutch switch as the switch them has?a very easy life.

Al this said I like a working VATs system and mine is still operational even as an LS swap manual car.

There is a wedge on the start rod that only fits through the shifter collar has when the shifter is in park or neutral.

The press brake to shift function on the 92-96 cars works as stated, with the solenoid pulling a cable to unlock the shifter. The trans position switch at the bottom of the column energizes the relay in run, start, or bulb test, and the brake/cruise switch deactivates it.

All of the B-Body cars have a neutral safety switch. It is located at the base of the steering column. It only makes the starter circuit when the shifter is in park or neutral. You can still turn the key, but the starter will not operate

Gee ,thanks for clarifing that for us.
  • So that was your correction of the post where you said the key would turn to start when the shifter is in gear but the neutral switch ( which there isnt one ) would stop the starter from energizing ?

Yeah , no one was talking about that as it has nothing to do the cranking which this thread was about.
