Just arrived yesterday and I was thinking I should hit it with a few coats of clear to keep it from oxidizing under the hood? Why not?

I went with the Delco #252-700 about 4 years ago and it's still going strong....

I did have to bend the 1 heater hose tube slightly cause it put the Heater Hose too close to the P/S Pulley. This had to be carefully done since this pipe is just a pressed in fitting and I did not want to loosen that connection.

In the past, I had used "Clear" on an older pump and it looked good for a little but it Yellowed and really looked crappy. When doing this last pump, I just got Engine Enamel (Gray) in a can and used that. It has held up really well and the pump still looks nice. So i'd consider going Color rather than clear.

Also, you may want to do this mod to help protect the opti if/when the pump starts to fail....

there are some pics there that give you an idea of how the pump looked after it was painted Gray. I've been real happy with the look and how well it has held up over the years.

Excellent advice, for an original engine with leaky seals and gaskets, the clear would probably get gunked up anyway. So hi temp engine enamel is the way to go. Is the stuff you got gray?

Thanks for the tip on the Opti, would like it to last for the life of the vehicle.

Yes. It was just Rattle Can Engine Enamel in GRAY that I picked up at AutoZone. Taped off the Bearing on the back, The Block Ports and the Hose Pipes. As you may have noticed, I painted the Front Cover Black to match the Black Pulley Covers and used some Stainless HW to mount the Cover.

Edit - most know this but prep is the key to any paint job. I scuffed up the WP with a scotchbrite pad and then used a cleaner prep, then a matching high temp primer before paint. I also where rubber gloves to keep the skin oil off the part.

Hope u have better luck than I did ... this was after 2 years with the same pump.. what’s funny is that I just replaced the “replacement” my mechanic used when this happened about 2 weeks ago. This time around used a Gates tho b/c it comes with a lifetime warranty

"Lifetime" warranties mostly used to sell inexpensive knock-off parts that would be a tough sell otherwise. Grew weary of replacing "lifetime" garbage years ago. I don't care if they are free,my time isn't free. Spending far less time replacing parts these days as a result...

And Ima guess those 2 other pics show the seal fell off and shorted several ball bearings?

I still have a "real" NIB AC Delco that is 17 years old.....and will only use it as a door stop. It was the 9th replacing the then 500 mi old, AC Delco WP the dealership gave to me after my then 8th with 500 mi on it puked

After dealership replaced 8 WP's & Opti (because WP's leaked) when the car was under its 3/36k mi new car warranty I went Meziere EWP....that was 20 years ago and 90k + miles and still have the same EWP and Opti. I have replaced the C&R though on the Opti

+1 on the "DON'T buy it because it has lifetime warranty".... It's a #'s game with most buyers not owning the car long enough after part swap to return it. Been there and done that.

Of the mechanical WP's I have purchased for other cars, Had better luck with NAPA Gold brand ones (whoever makes those). They are not the cheapest and either have a 12 or 24 month warranty

Only went with the gates this time around because it was my best option at the the time. Warranty is usually the last thing I take into consideration when buying replacement parts. Like you, I’d rather not have to come back and do any job all over again due to a poor quality part... but sadly, even the “quality” parts for these cars are not holding up like they use to or just aren’t being manufactured anymore :/

For water pumps? I'd take an AC Delco casting,and convert to an electric. Way longer life than any mechanical, never had one fail.... I replaced with a new one after 10 years in roughly 5-10 minutes,and kept older one for a spare.

I buy the NOS Delco water pumps that were made in North America. Getting hard to find. You have to be very careful and install them just right and with care. So far I have 9 years running on one and 2+ on the next. 2 different LT1 cars. No to the Chink crap, "Delco" or not.
