I am in the process of installing my mobile DVD player and thought I'd post a pic. I removed the cup holder and ashtray in my 93 Caprice to provide a space for the installation. I still need to make a trimplate to fill the small gaps to either side of the unit and the space below it.

I like the unit pretty well so far. It plays DVDs (duh ;) ), CDVs, audio CDs, CDRs & CDRWs, and (this is a big plus for me) MP3s.

Anyway - here's the pic:

Looks good. I have been considering this but would really like something more stealthy. My screen will be in my overhead console so if I can have the DVD player out of site then
no one would know any of it was even there. This is in my wagon, so there is no trunk to put it in. And, without an ashtray where would I keep my change and breath mints?

Looks great! I've got a DIN size DVD player to go in my 98 GMC Jimmy center console, and the screen is going in the Astro overhead console. I can't wait to get it in. If you're like me, you'll probably be spending more time in your car since you've got a new "toy". Looks really good with the DVD player mounted where the ashtray was. From the front, it almost looks stock. Great job!

hi all,

dave here,

fakess it looks like in that pic that the screen is a "wide screen" but that there is a black bar above and below the movie that is playing, my home tv is a regular screen and when i play a widesceen dvd i get those black bars, also the movie looks widened like when on my friends home wide screen when it plays regular tv he can use the whole widescreen but gets that widened look. is that the only way it plays?

it looks like liv tiler, the girl from lord of the rings and armagedon, i heard she put on wieght so maybe your screen is ok.

The black bars are there because the original aspect ratio of the movies are not the same as the screen. When you watch VHS tapes or movies on TV the sides of the picture are actually chopped off. This way you can see the whole picture as the director originally intended it to be.

hi all,

dave here,

threeimpalas does the movie thats playing not look funny to you?(to wide) i get the idea of the black bars on a regular tv aspect ratio 4:3 but how come on a widescreen aspect ratio 16:9, the movie thats playing on the eclipse head unit looks like aspect ratio 8:3. there should be a menu on the head unit so the movie does not look "wider".

fakess is that a widescreen 16:9 ?, it looks like it.

off in the future i would like a simular set up (in dash tv like fakess) but i would get annoyed real fast if that is the only way the movies looked.

thanks,

dave goshorn

Sorry I took so long to respond, guys. I've been busy building LED 3rd brake lights for the past couple of days and haven't been on the forum.

That's why you need a center console. ;)

Thanks! :D Actually, the unit sticks out more than I might like (the ac/heater mechanism limits the available mounting depth). I've been thinking of painting the exposed sides of the unit medium gray to help it blend in.

and

quote:
...is that a widescreen 16:9?

threeimpalas is absolutely right.
quote:
...the original aspect ratio of the movies are not the same as the screen.

As to how my screen handles the picture - there are four selectable "wide" modes on my Eclipse head unit. One {shown in the pic) displays the picture just as it would on a home TV. Another "stretches" a non-widescreen picture to make it appear to be widescreen (and thus distorts the image like you were talking about). The third mode crops the edges of a widescreen image in order to fill the screen (no black bars). The fourth mode is the "normal" mode. In answer to another question you had, yes, the Elipse monitor is wider than a normal TV monitor. as a result, "normal" mode produces black bars on the sides of the image. These black bars are really not very large and not all that noticable (to me, anyway).

The picture I posted is showing a DVD playing in 16:9 aspect ratio. If I play a DVD in the "TV standard" aspect ratio the image will fill the screen (nearly - see above comment) just as it does on a regular monitor.

quote:
...it looks like liv tiler, the girl from lord of the rings and armagedon...

Yep, that's Liv... and strangely enough, that's Lord of the Rings.

The brand name is Questar and it can be purchased at Fry's Electronics (don't know if they have those in Chicago) for $149.99. Actually, they had a package deal with a monitor for $199.99. I didn't need the extra monitor but a friend of mine did. Made the price real nice! :D

Looks good, I mounted my DVD in the same place in my wagon. I removed the ash tray and some coin tray? Mine fits almost flush, but it still sticks out a little. When I get some bonnie seats I'll build a console to conceal the DVD. Now if I can just find an empty hole to cram the VCR into.
