The Fleetwood has been relegated to kid hauler and driveway ornament for a while now. I just haven't had time to mess with it and as a direct result it's getting pretty shabby. OTOH the tires are just flat worn out. I put it off and put it off but one of the rear ones reached the point of being just dangerous, as well as needing to be aired up every other damn morning at 4AM. So I picked up a pair of 275 Nittos with the intention of slapping them on and worrying about the problems this would cause come spring.

Discovery one: 275/50/17's on the rear and 255/50's on the front does not make the antilock/traction control go ape ****. 200 miles later there's still no idiot light or any issues. I had fully expected this to be at least an annoyance, maybe enough of one to give in and send the comp back to Herter, but, nuthin'. Color me surprised.

Discovery two: why do women only complain about the noises you can never find or that don't exist? We pulled the passenger rear off and about 10 feet back towards the shop I finally did a double take. What was the big black thing sticking out at a right angle?

Well, gee, ain't nuthin'. Just the top half of the air shock. The bottom, you ask? Who the hell knows. It's gone. So I ask the Better Half "Hon, did you hear anything odd in the rear of the car recently?" Yep, says she. A big pop and then some rattling...but it still drove ok. Took a long time for the level ride to turn off, though...

Next time when I think "Damn, this thing is riding like crap!" I'll take the time to look then and not put it off. So, some Monroes this weekend it is, and a good time to throw the SS springs in the back, too. I suppose this means I need to get front end parts sooner than next May...

Are you using SS wheels? I never thought that big a tire would fit back there that is good news!

Yeah, 275 is the perfect tire for a FWB on Imp wheels. Same height as the stock 15's, tucks right under the back end. Just trim the handles on the skirts and you're good to go. Definitely reveals how off-center everything is, though. There's probably very near an inch of clearance between the sidewall and the inner panel on the driver side. There's a few air molecules on the passenger side. That's going to get some "adjusting" this weekend, too.

Good to know. Is the off center situation caused by suspension geometry or by the way the body sits on the frame?

I believe it's the body mounting. That's what I'm counting on, anyway. Otherwise it'll just have to stay as is until I get control arms and figure out how to make the panhard parts fit...
