Hi I plan a moderate spring drop on my 9C1 caprice. How much is enough to notice and how much too much drop for the street? I was thinking of a 1-2" drop.I do plan on drag racing this car so I ws thinking of cutting one coil off the bottom of fronts and using Moog cc627's on the back. This would give a fairly soft spring for racing. Also I already have new 1" shorter shocks that would work good. When I cut the fronts doesn't this leave the spring end at a wrong angle? Where you would have to heat and bend it to make it sit flat again? I know heating isn't a good idea but hows it going to fit? Or is it better to just go with a set of progressive rate type springs maybe like Vogtland [1.5" drop] or hotchkis [1.8 drop]? Thanks Tim

I believe the Impala is about 1.5" lower than the 9c1, so yes it is a noticable drop. If you went with the Vogtland, etc, spring you'd be dropping much more than they advertise, since those drops are for the Impala.

As Rax stated in the previous post, the drop advertised by Hotchkis & other spring manufacturers out there, are using the Impala as a base unit for the drop measurement, so the drop on a 9c1 would need to add about 1 -1.25" to the drop measurement..

If you went with a set of Stock SS Spring it would be noticeable
a Set of Hotchkis or other spring would be really noticeable

My Hotchkis springs will let me bottom out on speed bumps if I don't go over them SLOW.

It's not ghetto to cut springs as long as you use a saw and not a torch. A lot of guys here have cut springs to lower the car or fine tune ride height.

There is a guy on here that posted pics (before and after) of his 9c1 with almost a full coil cut off the front and cc627's in the rear. If the search worked properly I would have linked it.

When I lower my 9c1 this is what I'm going to do.

Eh i have been told by many professionals that cutting the springs is a horrible idea really. your changing the springs efectiveness lol.. the spring is meant for the car. all you do is weaken it and change its performance.. eh id do it if i wasnt affraid of changing the way my car handles. i think my 9C1 handles damn good for a boat so why would i wanna change it? just my opinion though so its all good :D

Cutting a spring does not weaken it. You are right that it does change its “effectiveness”. That is why you cut it, to change its “effectiveness”!

Eh whatever just what ive been told by many of my instructors so whatever i believe them makes sence to me really. a springs strength is determind by how many coils it has isnt it? or how thick the coil is? i wanted to cut them at school but i was told they wouldnt even allow me to cause its a really stupid idea.. the spring loses its progression i thought so whatever its all good do what you want.. but there is an easier way to lower your car on a budget.. get a fatter girlfriend.. haha

HI guys sorry it took me so long too finally reply to this thread. My system is not to compatable with this web site, can't reply most days. I don't see anything wrong with cutting springs as long as you cut them the right way. Herb Adams and others have been telling how to cut springs for handling for years. I've heard from them that minor cutting on stock springs brings their rate up stiffer in the area of 10-20%.That would only improve handling and lower center of car at same time. The question I need answered is when you cut the spring end will bottom sit level? When I lowered my 79 Trans am years ago the bottom of cut spring pointed down at a more sharp angle. Back then I just heated bottom coil and pushed on ground till bottom was level[which I should say worked fine after this also].Now days that's a no-no. What are these springs different because of how they sit in notch in bottom control arm? Thanks Tim

Thats what I'm doing to my Imp. Cutting the fronts 5/8 of as coil and putting Moog cc627's in the back. I've heard of several people doing this right now and talked to some that already have done it. Seems like a pretty cost effective way for a lowered stance. Ed Runion talked about this a while back.
