I know that you don't need spring compressors to change the coil springs on an Impala, but do you need them on the 9C1s?

Anyone who has lowered their 9C1 I would appreciate input.

The rear springs will pretty much fall out if you remove the shocks. Make sure that you have the rear end supported by a jack though!!
For the fronts I would recommend a spring compressor. I have heard of others using the jack and A-arm technique, but I have also heard of springs flying out and imbedding themselves in concrete walls! :eek: You do not want to be in the way of a spring releasing premeturely. I can't imagine they are too much to rent from a rent-all tool place, so be safe. :cool:

I did the spring swap on my 91 9c1 about three weeks ago with no compressor for the front. With the jack under the control arm, once you get the ball joint seperated, you just need to lower the jack slowly to let the spring open up.. There is virtually no place for the spring to go, as matter of fact, in order to remove the spring, I had to have a helper force the control arm downward while I wrestled the spring out. I think stories of people seeing them springs shoot through walls didnt have the jack in the right spot so when the ball joint was seperated, there was rapid spring expansion. I installed Suspension Techniques springs as well which from what I gather lower the car more than most brands on the market.

I changed my rear springs out on my 9C1 and I needed spring compressors. I didn't have to unbolt the shock this way.

Take the wheels off, put the spring compressors on, compress the springs, slide them out through the opening above the wheel well.

Yes, go rent a spring compressor that goes on the inside of the spring, that way, you can use it front and back. For the rears, it's easier to just compress the springs than to have to disconnect the shocks and having to support the axle with a jack. The fronts are easier to do if you take out the A-arm bolts and don't mess around with the ball joints.

i have replaced springs in about 20 cars and have never needed a spring compressor. if you unbolt the a-arm from the frame to remove the spring, be preparied to do a lot of swearing while trying to get it back in place. just split the ball joint. but dont cut the boot!

I left the floor jack about 1/4 inch under the a arm and beat on the side of the ball joint with a brass hammer, then PLOP. She seperated and the spring pushed the a arm onto the jack and thats it! This way you dont tear the boot, and nothing else is damaged with brass. The ball joint will pop apart. I wasnt about to do it the other way, seems like a chore getting them bolts back in.
