Hi,

I hoped I had solved this problem, but I guess not...

95 Roadmaster Wagon with LT1: sometimes starts badly after sitting for 1 or more days. Battery is good, starter motor is good.

Engine cranks and turns at a normal speed, but it wont run.

After continuously cranking for about 1 minute and alternately depressing or pumping the gas pedal, the engine finally catches and immediately runs smoothly, no hiccups whatsoever and good response to the throttle.

If I stop cranking, sometimes the engines gives one `blub` as if it´s just running on one combustion round in one cylinder.

So far I´ve replaced: spark plugs, ignition cables, rotor, rotor cap and iginition module.

Please help...

I'll ask at the shop.

The guys over there think it's ignition-coil related. They are under the impression it's got to to do with damp/wet weather.

Is it safe to rule out a faulty optiplex (since the car runs great once it's started)?

Perhaps it's just cold.
Does it have a block heater?
Can you "plug it in" like we do here in Canada in the winter?
Just how cold is the weather?

No block heater and no plug in. We actually don't need it here. Hardly ever gets colder than -5 to -10 C (14-23 F). Lately it's been around 0 C (32 F), but the car has been known to show starting problems at outside temperatures of 13-15 C (55-59 F). Car is always parked outside.

I'll put in a new coil one of these days and see if that eliminates the problem. If not, I'll have to look into fuel related solutions (will do a pressure test).

Since it runs fine once it starts, and the problem only shows up after sitting, I would check for one or more leaking injectors. Fuel puddled in the cylinders could prevent starting until you had cranked it enough to clear. Check for fuel pressure leak down after shutting it off. Not sure what the spec is, but there should be a procedure in the manual.

Hi Erenaud,

The idea of having bad injectors was in the back of my head too, but since the problem is not structural (sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it wont start after sitting for 20 hrs and sometimes it runs fine after sitting for 4 days), I more or less ruled it out for the time being. It always starts after sitting less than let's say 16 hours.

Got a fuel pressure tester?
Did you ever check this? With the key on, engine off the pressure should be between 41-47 psi. I just had a week long problem with my wagon similar to yours. Turned out it was a bad wire in the plug going to the ICM.

Just had the coil replaced. The old one had some move on it, so I hope that was the culprit. I'll find out the next few weeks. Fingers crossed!
