msd distributor

I have a new msd pro billet distributor, msd coil ,msd wires ngk plugs and new gm ignition module. I think the distributor is my issue but once the motor gets to 5k or higher it starts to have an ignition break down and the engine will studder. I had a oem distributor on this new engine but the rotor blew apart before i could really test the engine out so i baught this msd unit and now I think I am regretting it. Has any one else had experience with these opti units ?

I run the MSD pro billet distributor and haven't had ANY issues thus (a lil over a year or about 5K miles) far. You say your 'above 5K' stumble is something that started AFTER you put the new parts on? Is this something that occurred after you buttoned everything up and filled with fluids, or did it take some drive time?

no the problem didnt start until i put the msd distributor in. My factory one blew apart with the new engine installed but ran great on the other engine. So i figured I would upgrade to the msd unit and have had nothing but problems in the high rpms since i installed it. MSD tech support is a joke when I talked to them but I am thinking of putting on a junk factory one i have laying around to see if the problem goes away. I just have been reading in other forums that this is a on going problem with these units as well as the optics going out but just wanted to see if any one here ran into this issue.

yes.

sent it back to MSD under warrenty and then sold it. above 5k miss. same issue as you on new motor with new MSD opti...

compared side by side the MSD "looked" to be a better product but my experience was not positive.

put my old GM unit on and have had no issues in a few years with it.
I got 60k before my msd took a dump:( got about 1k miles on it now after rebuild. The msd tech will not give you details about the rebuild there pretty much there to tell you "we got it that day,you will get this day" type stuff.. and then give you a tracking numbercwm5
This is what I have been reading and is exactly what mine is doing. But i also hear some people have no issues. I guess its just a roll of the dice. Tech support sounded like a recording. All he would say is if there is no codes then or distributor is fine. any question I asked that was his response. So I will switch mine out and post my findings.

Call MSD and get a RTA, tell them your distributor is not working. They will ask for a CC, and the maximum they will charge for an R&R is 150, unless it has gone up.

If it's under warranty, they will cover it. Sounds like you have talked to the wrong person.:p

I bought Ball's old, new distributor, for my parts department.:) I now use it a crank trigger for my LTCC.:D

It's cheaper for me to have MSD r&r their stuff, than buy
overpriced OEM stuff, now.

I still think their distributor is better than stock, but you are going to have a bigger failure percentage, IMO, with their stuff, because they make so few of them.
GM Opti is the way to go

GM performance from Summit racing $349. Always works well.
well i switched out the opti units and now with a junk unit in, the car will go over 5000rpms with out any issue. So all I have to say is I will never buy a msd opti again. Not just for the issue i had with it but for the ignorance of there tech support and there not willing to listen to there customers problems. But long story short the msd billet distributor is what caused my engine to miss over 5k rpms and drop rpms all through the range. I will be back on the dyno hopefully thursday so hopefully i can get the numbers out of my car finally.
