Propane actually runs cooler than gasoline. When done correctly, it gets about the same mileage. The Reality is, though, there is no effective way to properly run propane on a vehicle that is set up for dual fuel. You'll be making compromises. My father has been in the business of setting up vehicles to run on propane for over 20 years, so I am familiar with it.

That's insane. You can get a CPT or a Goodwrench tranny for that or a little more. I suggest you continue to shop around some.

I had a car and a truck converted to run propane/gasoline. I think it was around 1980 when I had it done. It was right after the second Arab embargo.

My car was a 77 Buick Park Ave and my truck was a 78 GMC Silverado 454 engine. It cost about $1000 back then to convert, I was living in Washington State at the time. The truck had an 80 gallon tank and the car had a 30 gallon tank. Back then, if I remember right, gas was $1.40 per gallon and propane was $.49 per gallon. MPG was slightly less with propane. Both vehicles had carburetors.

Where the tank was in the trunk of the car I had to have a propane detector. You could go a long way between fillups. By just flipping a switch and pulling a lever you could change from propane to gas, on the fly.

When I moved back east propane was at least $1.00 per gallon more and hard to find bulk plants.

I can remember changing the oil at 10,000 miles and the oil would be as clean as the day you put it in the engine. Propane does not have the lubricating properties that gasoline does. I know the truck bent a valve, whether it was from the propane I don't know.

I used to pull a 40 ft. 5th wheel travel trailer, which was a pretty good load. I can remember the truck backfired and popped through the carb. It melted down the carb. I changed the carb, wires and plugs and never had a problem again. Kind of scary though.

I eventually got rid of the vehicles. I took both systems off and not too many years ago they went to the dump.

Now with duel fuel and fuel injection, I am sure things are different.

Anyways

From my experience, they were almost never a problem to start in winter. The odd time the converter would frost up, then you just pour warm water over it and wait a couple minutes. This was in Edmonton, where things get pretty darn cold -- colder than out here in Ontario.

Having owned two propane / gas vehicles, I would bring it to a bulk propane station that installs conversions and have them look it over. Your problem could be something very minor that they could spot. Your car should start instantly while running on propane.

the 4L60E, and 4L60(700R4) are pretty much the ONLY units he deals with. So he knows them very well. He knows what's gonna work, and what won't. I bet you he pays better attension to detail, and what parts are in it(he knows which parts work, and why), than your local guy. Way, WAY to many horror stories about local rebuilds that get trashed in short order, do to shady parts, or a lack of detail in the clearances.

Do I think a CPT is the BEST unit out there? Hell no. I'm sure many other places put out a great 4L60E. But at the prices his units are, and the value Shane offer's, with a pretty good rep. It's pretty hard to beat.

BUT, you have to make your own desision. Do not buy his unit because your basing it on ME. look at his site, talk to him. Search his rep, and I think that will speak for itself. So, SO many times this year i have almost bought a Level 2. But this 160,000 mile trans from my caddy jus keeps going(knock on wood). I thought it was toast 10,000 miles ago. But it has been brought back to life by voodoo & luck.

 Hopefully your Canadian AAMCO Transmission Company isn't like it's American Counterpart, as if it is, Personally I would run the other way FAST!!! Our AAMCO's are notorious for junk work,Price Gouging, cause damage to a vehicle just so that they could repair it.

Definately looks like AAMCO has the same practices regardless of what side of the Border they are on
Good Luck with Your's , but Honestly I wouldn't leave a Service Tech alone with your car, let alone leaving your car unattended in their parking lot as well(Yep caught a Service Tech sliding out from under my car, and my Father's car, at two seperate locations, with the incidents 3 or 4yrs apart from each other
).

Sorry Rog, wasn't trying to upset you when I posted any of it! Just was trying to give a Forum Bro the Heads-up on a Company that was a Nightmare for myself,my Family, and some of my friend's as well! :( Honestly I hope that place is one of the Rare ones that will do a Customer Right, weither with the Build,Repairs, or a Refund if it doesn't work out. The Local ones around me were like trying to get blood from a Turnip, when it came to getting money back.
The one time it did happen here, was when an Employee was going to leave the Company anyways, gave my Father back the $300 for the Scam Check. Ofcourse the Tow bill was still $200 to get the car back home, after the Trans was burnt up due to a Crushed Cooler Line that left us stranded part-way to Cali
