New Members posting on ancient posts

To all regular forum members; if some newb posts on a long-dead thread, just ignore it. No need to wrote a response novel. Mods just might quietly delete it after a few days.

To all NEW forum members: please pay attention to the DATES on threads and posts. This forum has been up around 20 years, everything you could possibly want to know has already been discussed. So read before you post.

That is all.

If any consolation, the same thing's trending on at least one other car forum with the same host. In cases where said newb in fact smells like an outright spammer/scammer/bot, the path of least resistance is just to simply hit the 3 dots upper right in the suspect post to 'Report' it for disposal and/or ban. But I'll admit it's been hard in the past to not be tempted to repay exceptionally daft or trollish postings with a little dose of the poster's own medicine in return. But that's turning out no more gratifying than picking wings off a moth.

But to get the message above in the hands of newbs who need it the most, it sure would be enjoyable and more productive to have the host employ just a few of the safeguards for approval to begin posting that kept this type nuisance (and potential harm to the site) much lower in the past. ala new member introduction/approval, min. post counts for certain privileges....
I spend most of my time doing searches here, so I often find (close to) what I want in the ancient threads. (I just wish we had more of the old pictures)

Not here, but on another forum I revived an old thread to build upon a topic. I wasn't trying to get responses from the original posters and I acknowledged the age of the thread in my post, but I saw no reason to re-hash prerequisite specifics previously discussed in that thread. I thought this was more courteous than starting a new thread for my question, and hearing how noobs never use the search function.

I have seen the abuses and time wasters I think you are addressing (i.e. trying to buy a part that was for sale in 2008), but I try to keep a pretty open mind about people who might be searching the ancient threads and looking for additional or more current information on the old topics.

One way to keep at least the absolute oldest old threads on a topic from popping up in search results for someone to absent-mindedly click on would be to change the default setting for 'Sort By' from Relevance to Date on the Advanced Search page. Whatever code is being used to define the platform's notion of 'relevance' is succeeding only in exhuming the most rotted smelly old threads, where any of the fresher younger threads that appear when toggled to 'Date' miraculously contain more useful posts benefiting from accumulated brain trust over the years. I've raised this point several times, but it hits dead air.

All in all I will admit I'll expend a little extra effort flicking a poster on the ear when it's evident both by the painful sloppiness of their posting and the even greater pain of actual content that they read only the original post and not a single one after, - even if there's 50 total. Such personal laziness and embarrassing evidence of the failure of our education system cannot go 'unrewarded'. 🤣

Or my personal favorite, those who don't use punctuation. Makes me run out of breath just reading it.

Just so you all know, the forum owner actually has a pretty good spammer filtering system; very few get through. Just in the past five days we've had 200 spammers attempt to sign up for forum accounts. So you see maybe 1-2% of what we do. The user who asked about mods for 6.7L ford motors for his '98 Impala was one of the few. He was reported and booted shortly thereafter.
Revised policy - new members ignorantly posting on ancient "for sale" threads shall be heckled before I (or jayoldschool) locks the thread, for instructional and 'posterity' reasons.

I certainly appreciate yours (and Jay-'s) dogged efforts keeping some semblance of order in our revered aging braintrust. What amounts to amusement for us poking a few lazy inattentive adolescents in the eye over morning coffee ends up real work for you's in fending off an invading hoard of scatter-brained post polluters.
The forum itself is partially to blame. Scroll down. See "recommended reading:? Have a look at the post dates. That is the reason why this is happening.

Can't YOU as Super Moderator do something about this?

Does your input carry no weight?
No. Zero. All the VS forums (hundreds of them) are the same.
Well I'll come at least part way on that. --> But <--, every last one also shows when last 'updated' for those who care to appreciate the timeliness of info they're using. I keep putting the old college try at figuring out why (and how) this necro-posting has been 'trending'. The only plausible indicators point to the forum owners doing what they can to lure and crosslink users of the most popular current social media apps for presumed higher visibility and revenue-generating opportunity.

Regrettably once a newb is made aware of this site and gets lured in it appears the majority are disheartened just how detail-laden the forum is, and that there's little applicability or interest in such things as emojis and 1- or 2-word replies.

And, grandpas wagon,
I'll hazard a guess that'd be a No and a No. I'm also guessing current compensation is about $0/hr. for a Mod; probably less for the fancier title. For the money the host paid for that wacked-up code I can't imagine them choking up the cost of the change order for better quality screening or vetting programming changes. I pestered Admin repeatedly early on after assimilation into the new platform with quirks and foibles and illogical aspects noticed, with just consistent dead air in return. Expected sort of, as any change made here amounts to a huge bill on all the other forums they own.

You can track periodic updates to the site using FAQ: Release Notes
Have a gander at the most recent to catch current focus and prioritizes: Ex:

Updating Recommended Communities
We’ve renamed the Popular Communities to Recommended Communities, and are continuing to make improvements on how these are automatically selected. These will include “New” and growing communities that we think will be of interest to you.

[Sarcastic observation: - IDK HTH they'll improve on the current ones: FWD Impala Forum, Lowriders Forum and Halloween Forum........]

Reaction System Project Introduction
Currently, in our platform we have a very basic pointing and trophy system. We are looking at expanding our pointing system across the board with different levels within our communities. By doing this we hope that we will incentivize users to complete actions and distinguish themselves within the community.

We are currently in the discovery phase, and excited to share more with you soon!

[High time they developed critical Trophies and Points, but I was hoping for some cash surrender value for all those I've ammassed.

Sorrowfully NOT the definition of 'incentivized' or 'distinguish within the community' I was raised with]

Card View - Brand New Look
As part of our effort to respond to the feedback from the community regarding the "white space" issue on our sites, we are currently working on a brand new look for our sites, a new "Card View" aiming at

[guessing this has to do with getting the font smaller and more stuff showing on a mobile phone]
  • Fixing the white spacing issue,
  • bringing more focus on the core content of the page,
  • providing a better visual experience

There IS something that can be done - though it protects the less-than-thorough from mocking:

Delete "For Sale" threads that are inactive for more than, say, three years, especially if the original poster has also been inactive for a similar period of time.

I do not think you guys are thinking this through. Posting to dead threads that they do not read can be a good indicator and allow you to decide how much time do you want to spend on them.

I do wonder if maybe smart phones and tablets do not show the date information, Small screens?

Deleting "For Sale" threads is removing member information and a waste of time.
Yes, it's phones and yes it's perhaps more time spent than the worth. But I'd consider someone flicking me on the ear after a haphazard post as fair payment for cluing me in not to expect a worthwhile response from such an ancient thread. And to be overall in life a little more observant and attentive to detail in the future.

And agree not 'disappearing' any old threads just to counter others from carelessly exhuming them.

I was only trying to be funny, not make a political statement.
Same. All jokes!

appreciate what you do for the community.
it’s one thing to make a repair. It takes WAY longer to document/photograph said repair, just to help strangers on the internet! Keep up the good work

This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
