Finally installed my Hotchkis springs and
RCA's, along with new front upper and lower
(5/8) arms. The 9C1 feels like it lost half
a ton!
I also put in a new idler arm, the NAPA one
I replaced last summer was loose again, made
the new Kumhos track a little.
I haven't really pushed it yet, it's raining
so bad I'm starting to think Ark...

Having it aligned tommorow, hopefully the
offset shafts will make things easy.
Now I'll give myself an anyuerism trying to
pick out the right bars. 90% towards Hotchkis..

Sounds cool...the Hotchkis bars matchup really nice to the Hotchkis springs. I'm sick of the rain too, I spent all afternoon working on my car outside in it.

damn rain would stop so I can finish my cruise

uncle hulka,
R U gonna instruct the alignment shop to FIRST remove any & all upper control arm shims & reverse those offset shafts BEFORE starting the alignment? Maybe you could do this yourself before getting to the shop? Would the car end up aligned properly under these circumstances, ya think? I have the GM offset shafts on both sides with the wheel side facing the wheel [Hotchkis springs all around] and ended up with a ton of shims on both sides..!

Wished I would have remembered to follow my own advice. I would really like to know that these cars can be aligned with those offset shafts reversed to minimize the number of shims used. I think Ed Runnion said it works good but don't quote me on that...

Congrats on your FE upgrade.
FWIW, if that NAPA IA has same size joint as the OEM Arm, you're denying yourself the benefits of the enhanced design IA by Moog[K6187T].

Larry, the NAPA steering parts are mostly sourced from Spicer, and are the same as the AC Delco parts, that are pretty much equal to or better than anything from Moog...when I bought my car it had the Moog in it, I put in a Napa brand and noted that it looked a bit beefier than the Moog. When I did my complete front end rebuild last August I noted that the AC Delco part going on my car and Napa part coming off were identical other than the new one was new and the old one was old. The Napa arm I pulled off had a lot of miles on it and still felt ok too, but I was rebuilding the entire front end and already had another one, plus an idler arm is cheap, so I said screw it and put the new one on anyways...it's a good part.

That's what I thought, too. The NAPA arm is similar
to the MOOG design, not the OEM.
XBOX, the shim stack on my car is just fine. The
offset arms were a precautionary measure more than
a neccesity.
I can't figure out why the NAPA arm loosened up so
fast, I was surprised. I did tag a pothole in the
rain one night hard enough to bust a new Bilstien
(DAMMIT!).
The car just feels more like I think it should now,
"planted." Looks great too!

Did you shoot some grease into all of the zerks before ever moving anything in the steering linkage? That might be why the idler failed prematurely...I always do my best to get it all assembled, torqued and cotter pinned, then grease it before I turn the wheel. Then every chance I get, I wipe off the zerks and hit them all with the grease gun.

Oh, HELLS yeah I did! I got red Mobil 1 stains
to prove it! I even went lock-to lock with the
car jacked up and re-greased it. Maybe I'll have
better luck with this one. The looseness did
happen suddenly, not over time.
BTW, Mike I have a question for you.. I'll Email.

I've never physically seen, or for that matter, haven't heard anyone on the forum describe the Spicer[Dana] Idler Arm, as comparable with the Moog K6187T.
If the joint is about the same size as the Moog Arm[as stated], then it should be a huge improvement over the OEM IA. OEM is crap!
