I know posts about tires normally go in the "Tires" section, but since I got very Caprice-specific tires for my car, I figured it'd be more appreciated here.

I just replaced my million-year-old Ameri G4Ses with Hankook Optimo H724s - whitewalls out, of course :)! When my local dealer had no idea how to find whitewalls for my car, Discount Tire came through for me, and with a great price (and their usual 30 minute install, wow!). However, not even they could find 235/70R15s with a whitewall anymore, so I went with 225/75R15, which is what my winters were anyway. The ride quality and lack of road noise out of these Optimos is superb.

Does anyone else run these tires?

I'll post pics once the car is re-washed and waxed, and the tires are all shiny (it's raining here right now, blech).

Haven't run those tires. Since you like whitewalls, I would have bought Vogue tyres in the 235--70-15. They are expensive but last a damn long time. I ran these on my 94 Fleetwood. Just my two cents worth.

They mentioned Vogue, but they said they had the gold stripe around the outside, which I really didn't want. If they do make a regular whitewall in 235/70R15, it was not presented to me.

And besides, at < $100 a tire, I couldn't say no to the Hankooks :).

Yea, vogue has the yellow stripe. But with 75K on a set and still rolling with more miles to go. I hope you get good mileage out of them.

Good choice of tires,Turbo. I have the Hankook 225/75/15's on my daily driver '89 wagon.so far I've put 40k miles on them and they are wearing very well.Still have excellent all weather traction,too.I think the whitewall width is just right as well.

Also,Eldorado Tempera is a real nice 235/70R/15 tire for the B4U caprices.I have these on my 96 B4U and like them so far.

I purchased the Eldorado Tempera's through Diamondback Classics.They make all sorts of custom vintage car radials.I had them smooth the side walls and remove any lettering for a cleaner look,as my B4U was ordered with black wall 235's. Jim

I love your wagon (and B4U), Jim! Hard to believe that's a daily driver, it looks fabulous!

It's sad that we have to go to SUV tires to get the 235/70 size now :(.

My car came with whitewalls when new, so I really wanted to replicate that. You're right, the whitewall width of the Hankooks is just about bang-on (comparing to the original spare in the trunk).

Jim, what do you use on your car's dash to protect it? I posted in the "interior" section, but never got a decent answer. I'm having "blotchy" patterns show up when I use Meguiar's Natural Shine (which works fine on tires, and does on my other cars' interiors...).

Hi Turbo,
For years,I only use Vinylnex by Lexol in my interior and all other plastic,rubber,etc.trim.
It is fantastic.Best I've ever tried.Here's a link to the product.

Sounds like you either have too much dressing product built up on your dash,or 2 incompatible dressing products applied one over the other which will cause the blotchiness look.

First I'd give the dash a good scrub/cleaning with any good all purpose cleaner.Always test a hidden spot first before taking it viewable.Then wipe it with a watered down damp micro fiber to get any poss remaining cleaning residue off.

A tip that I like to do when going for a good cleaning on the dash or other interior plastic trim,is to wrap a small scrub brush in a micro fiber soaked in the cleaner.It's effective and no messy drips.

Then put a generous application of Vinylex on and let it sit awhile.I like to put a second coat on and let it sit as well.Then I wipe it all down with a dry micro fiber and it looks evenly natural.

Thanks for the info! I don't know what the car was treated with before I got it, so that's definitely a concern. However, the Natural Shine was actually removing colour with each appilcation, and getting duller, quicker each time. That had me really worried.

That Vinylex looks cool, thanks for the tip; can it be bought in a store, or just on-line?

Tires Answer

I jsut got 2357015's in the Hankook line of the 725. They are white walls, but With my hub cap pattern (simulated wire wires) I put the black wall out.

The car, one of the last produced, came with 2357015 on it. But, that size was harder to find.

My car had 235/70 originally, too, but Discount Tire told me that they could find none in that size with whitewall. Hmmm, they must not have looked hard enough! Congrats on finding a set, though!

I think you should have put the whitewall out, though: with so many tires available WITHOUT whitewall, getting a set WITH it and putting them in just seems wrong ;).

I am having the hardest time findng tires for my 95 9c1. i want to keep the original Coprice look and can not find 225X70X15 performance tires. think the 235's wont mess up my ABS keeping the old tires on the rear?

So you have 275s on it now (reading your sig), and you want to go back to 225s?

Finding a high-performance tire in a 70-series section will be tough... have you considered a high-performance SUV tire? Just thinking out loud here...

I run 245/45R18 Goodyear Eagle GTs on my 400 hp G8, and they hold on pretty well, even at only 245 width; if you can find Eagle GTs in 225/70, they might work well.

Thanks, Jim! I like that they give you both the whitewall and "shiny blackwall" look (i.e. the ribbing around the circumference where the "HANKOOK" writing is that catches the light when dressed). The whitewall's a bit thinner than that of the Eagle spare, but not enough that anyone but the most hard-core enthusiast would ever notice :).

Firestone 710's are really good also and tada!!!!, Made in the good old USA.

Being made in the USA doesn't mean much to me. In many ways, I think I'd trust a Made in Korea tire more, to be honest: some times, in order to keep a product "Made in the USA" (or Canada, for that matter), a manufacturer will need to cheap-out on certain features, just to keep the price competitive (or else make the product more expensive, to which I say, no thanks :D). Other times, the product will be made elsewhere, and just have one "value added" step done in the USA (or Canada) and thus can be considered "Made in the USA" (or Canada). I live it every day: we do the final test and add the label "Made in Canada", and poof, a product that is otherwise completely made in Mexico can now say "Made in Canada". So, don't be fooled by everything that says "Made in the USA": marketing hype is behind a lot of it.

The market price of tires did not lower with the introduction of Chinese and Korean tires. They are charging US made prices for tires that cost them less to produce, boosting their bottom line. Depending on what line of tire you buy, nearly all manufacturers have low quality and high quality models.

Close, Chinese rubber is high because obama did one thing right and slapped a tariff on em , so now the cheap crappy tires are nearly the same price as a good tire. I'll try and keep every dime I can in the US.
