Does anyone k ow if the 96 impala ODOMETER board is the same as any of the earlier year Caprice odometers? I'm not talking about the complete cluster as we all know the president 96 was an digital cluster, I'm talking specifically about the digital readout portion of the odometer only. My best guess would be they are the same since the 96 odometer actually has PRND321 on the odometer but is covered by the cluster face.

Reason I ask is my odometer stopped working and this time it's not a resistor issue. There is a dark spot in the lower right corner of the odometer PCB line a burned spot that I'm fairly certain is the issue.

Pics of the problem
Look in the lower right corner you can see that dark black spot. I dont think it's supposed to be there and I dont recall seeing it there before. The odometer does not light up at all now and I've already checked the resistors and the solder joints and all is good there.

Did you check the pathways? Sometimes it's not the resistor connection that's the problem some times it's the pathways. That's why I solder the improved resistor directly to the points and the new resistor away from the board because it gets too hot. Getting hot can burn the pathways.

I have not, I will take it part tonight and take a close look. I hope that's the issue to be honest. I feel naked without a working odometer as I like to use it along with the fuel gauge to gauge my fuel level since the fuel sender isn't accurate any longer. That's another issue I have parts to repair but just haven't had the time or place to do it yet.

If you dissembled things like VCRs, CD players, or amps the "burn" marks would seem normal. I thought it was the common anode or cathode point. It seems to get bigger and blacker with age, as the display dims. It turns out it is part of the manufacturing. Google "getter"


Check the solder, circuit traces, and connectors. Sometimes totally dead electronics have a simple problem(no connection at some point).

Hmm, so I'm assuming this is from your cluster and it still works?

This is from my car. It was a GM reworked cluster. It had a "groundhog day" problem. It would record mileage but forget it every time the ignition was turned off. I have four clusters in stock and if I took apart the brightest I am sure I would find the same marks in the same place. Again it is a common feature of florescent displays.


I hate the digital dashes so that cluster with the fried memory chip was used for a analogue cluster.

Well upon further close inspection it turns out that the lead on one of the resistors broke and is causing my issue, I'm hoping there is enough left that I can make a solder connection. What is my option if I can't repair this one?
