My old Town Car had Sony Xplod head unit, Infinity Reference speakers and 1,000W Legacy Saphire 4ch amp.

I wanted to go with a new setup in the Impala. I had 2 10's by Audiobahn and didn't like the way that sounded. I don't need a lot of bass. I'm mostly going for that crisp, clear sound. With some bass on a side too ;)

Anyway, after doing some research, I've picked this out as my system for the Impala.

Headunit: Pioneer DEH-6500 ($200)

CD changer: 12 disk Pioneer changer

Front speakers: Infinity Kappa 462.5cfp ($95)

Rear speakers: Infinity Kappa 693.5i ($160)

Amp: Legacy Sapphire LA695

What do you think?

i'd look into a better deck then just run your infinitys off of that. eclipse makes good decks, and the alpines are supposed to be really good aswell. i wouldn't get the rear speakers and take that money and get components for the front. get 6.5 components and make up the 1/2 inch things to mount the speakser in the stock location in the door. i've always liked the sound of jl subs, actually i have a pair i could sell ya. get yourself a nice amp for the subs and you'll be very happy with your system. 6x9 with subs in the back just don't help anything. if you want to buy from the net, i suggest ebay. i've saved a ton buying audio stuff off there.

Camel, I don't want to go with subs in my car. I had Infinity Reference on my old Lincoln and they sounded VERY NICE. Infinity Kappas should sound even better, no?

As for the head unit goes, I can't really spend over $200-250 on the head unit. Alpines usually start at $300 (decent ones).

My friend had Pioneer head unit in his car and never had a problem with it. I think it's worth a shot

i see what your sayin, i really think a quality deck will work out alot better then an amp on your speakers. and i'd really get those 6.5's instead of the 4x6's. infinity does make good speakers though.

Go for the Infinity Kapaa 6 1/2' Components in the front doors and make Hacks door template for them. Here's the link: (Click on the pics to enlarge).
Hacks Door speaker templates

I Would NOT Attempt to run Infinity Kapaa Speakers off the headunit alone! The Kapaa's like to see at around 50 watts RMS Running thru them and that's Twice what a head unit alone puts out! Put a 4-Way amp on the Kappa's! This way you can also use the built in Crossovers in the amp for the front speakers (Between 100 to 150 Hz) If you dont intend to use a sub at all in your system, Just run the 6X9's at full range (No Crossover point) If you dont like the amp idea and go ahead with just running all 4 speakers with the head unit, Go with the Infinity reference series again! That line of speakers were made for good factory replacements! We have 4 Of them in the wifes 93 Roadmaster with the factory stereo. They dont take much power to drive them and they still sound great! Slap a pair of 100Hz "Bass Blockers" On The fronts and your done! BTW, I can tell you that the plastic factory 4X6 Speaker holders in the front doors will have to be modified (With a dremel) In order to fit a set of 4X6 Infinity Kappa Plate speakers in them! The magnets are to large for the plastic holders that mount to the doors (Im speaking from experience here). Whatever speakers/Amp setup you buy, Get them on E-Bay! I Bought all 4 Of my Kapaa's, My Alpine 5 Way Amp, Alpine head unit and 2-8" Kicker Free Air Subs Off of E-Bay And Saved About $500.00 Doing So! I Dont Require "Metal Rattling" Bass either!.....Mike

Just an fyi, there really is no head unit that will put out more than about 10 watts/channel, no matter what the brand. Anyone says anything else, they are puffin ya.
To get anymore power requires a power supply, which will generally not fit in a head unit.

Hmm, Interesting  So what your saying is that all manufacturer's that are quoting between 23-25 Watts RMS (Not peak) are basically Lying and Falsely Advertising their headunits Correct? This Alpine head unit So far is the only one I Have seen that requires you to wire it Directly to a Battery with a 10 Gauge wiring kit but it puts out 27 Watts RMS continuous 4-channel power.

get yourself a little jbl 4 channel amp off ebay and get good quality and at about the same price. atleast with a better name amp you know its going to put out the power it says its going to. my bp 1200 will do atleast 1200 wrms into a 1 or 2 ohm load. sometimes as high as 1400wrms at 1 ohm. or phoenix gold makes good amps. they are all over the place on ebay.

So I'm still a little not clear on this...

If I go with 6.5" component speakers in the front door, I can't use 6x9 in the rear deck and have to get a sub for the trunk?

OR

Can I just get 6.5" component speakers for the front door and get 6x9 for the rear deck and amp them to a 4ch amp?

I'm trying to avoid subs in the trunk by any means possible.

Thanks.

you don't need the sub, it all depends what you want. 6x9's will work well, i don't like having them and a sub together is all i was sayin. the bass just drowns out the sounds from the 6x9's. atleast thats what i have found in my car.

Mr. Untouchable:

6.5's in the doors and 6x9's in the rear deck will work just dandy for what you are doing. That legacy amp is not the greatest, but if you already have it, by all means use it. If you do not already have an amp, get something better.

Yes, You Can run both the 6 1/2's and the 6X9's at the same time but the infinity Kapaa's are Rated at handling 75-120 Watts RMS So you CANT Put a 250 Watt per Channel amp on them, You'll Fry them!........Mike

Ok, thanks for clearing that out for me.

So what amp should I go with? Looks like that Legacy Sapphire amp is garbage.

Lenny, Read my Prior Post concerning amp choices for your setup! Here Is the link to it. It's about half way down the post.
Which Setup for an amp

The Infinity Kappa's you picked out are a good choice! I Have Kapaa's in all 4 locations in my Caprice. You dont have to spend and arm and leg to get a good quality amp to fit your needs for this setup ($160.00 to 220.00) should be plenty.
Any amp that advertises 250 Watts per channel at the price is CHEAP! It's Overrated! All your going to need is a good quality amp that puts out Between 50 to 75 Watts RMS Per channel. I Ran All 4 Kapaa's off an older Rockford Fosgate 4 Way Amp and It Was rated at 50 Watts RMS Per channel. It was loud enough to drive me out of the car! Your not going to get pounding bass from the 6X9's in the rear but it will be enough for simple Bass fill for Classic rock Etc.. Let Us Know What you think and decide?.......Mike

first off... b-body guy is 100% right by saying that no deck will make more than 10 watts rms to a channel...

basically, if you have an amp with a high pass crossover on it that is decent, it will sound better than a deck will.

that alpine head unit is awesome.. you wont be disappointed with it, or the infinity speakers... kappas sound nice, perfects sound better but are kinda pricey..
make sure they're powered with an amp though with a high pass crossover set between 80-120 hz. the legacy will do the job, and if you have it, use it but if not, get a higher quality amp that puts out less wattage

basic rule of thumb (not for everything)... if a manufacturer rates their amps by putting their max wattage on the box, they're garbage.. look for rms ratings at 12 volts and 14 volts, either one...

any good 4 channel will do... just remember, your system is only as good as your weakest component, just like your engine... believe me, i've worked in a stereo shop for a while and done systems you wouldnt believe could sound good with the equipment they have but it does, and systems that you wouldnt believe could sound so crappy with the money they spent...

believe me, systems are my thing.
you'll be happy though with those speakers and deck for sure

Im still curious, How did the 2 of you arrive at this conclusion? If the Alpine 9815 Headunit with the V-Drive Internal amps I mentioned above requires that you wire it directly to the battery with a 10 gauge wiring kit and it is only putting out the 10 Watts RMS you say it does and Not the 27 Watts RMS that Alpine advertises, then whats the point of wiring it with a 10 Gauge wiring kit as Alpine says it requires? Please Elaborate on what makes 10 Watts RMS The limitation in a headunit?

Guys, I'm just about ready to order my system but I can't find a place that sells Alpine CDA-D857 head unit :( If they're discontinued, which I believe they are, I'm screwed. My second option is the Pioneer DEH-P77DH

Any place that you guys think that might carry still carry them?

my 2c: The Alpine stuff is OK but in my experience (three head units in the last six years or so) they can be harsh on the highs. They kind of require an EQ. For a lower end system I would go with Clarion or Eclipse. Very smooth but clear on the highs. And you can get an appropriate clarion for well below the 200 you are budgeting. Try ebay or sound domain.

as far as the 10 Watts RMS... pretty much. The alpine you referenced is exceeding this, but why would you shoehorn a 108 watt 4 channel amp into the size of two packs of cigarettes and then put that in your dash?

Yes Lenny, the Alpine CDA-D857 Full face unit (Which I have in my car) Was discontinued about a year ago when I got mine off E-Bay and even then, I was lucky to find one If you want a full face headunit, these are the only 3 that I Know of that are available out there!
GM Fullsize Headunits

Dont even bother with the audiovox unit!, Buy one of the Pioneer's off E-Bay, You'll save alot of $$$. Here's the links!.....Mike
