I want a unit that will allow mass-storage of MP3s (ie more than a CD-R) with a high-res screen to display ID3 tags... and I don't have/want/need an iPod.

I've tried some DVD units with 7" screens from Pioneer, Kenwood and even a $2,400 Eclipse... and all of them say "Error" when inserting a DVD-R with MP3s. Yet they play CD-Rs with MP3s and DVD-Rs with movies.

So I have found this...
Blaupunkt Memphis MP66

I've heard bad news about build quality with Blaupunkts, yet that was in the 90s. A few minutes Googling and I've found small problems with discs getting stuck but that is about it. Figured I'd ask around here though.

I suppose an iPod would be an answer to everything, I just have no use for one. I don't get out and bike/run/exercise etc nor do I listen to music at my cubicle.

Thanks. I have seen prices from $450 - $500.

A decent unit is fine. I am not out to impress anyone with a nameplate, nor am I trying to win any contests. I just don't want the damn thing to stop reading discs, or have the display get dead pixels after a year, etc.

It's funny talking about nameplates... I put my DVD-R of MP3s in the Pioneer/Kenwood/Eclipse units as stated above, and got an error. Yet the cheapy Jensen DVD unit played 'em just fine!

alot of those stereos do not support DVD-R playback. its not that the cheap ones are better its just a security feature they use.

when I was shopping for a car stereo I wanted the option you are looking for too but found about the no DVD-R play back. the 300 or so songs I can fit on a CD was not good enough so I bought the portable MP3 player with an Alpine Deck with auido imput and a NOMAD JUKEBOX ZEN
you can get a used one for less then $100.00 and do what I do.

this things are big and bulky compared to an Ipod and the reason is that they have a Laptop Hard Drive. A UPGRADABLE HARD DRIVE!!!!!!!!!
its a Fujitsu hard drive. my jukebox was slammed on the ground and it stoped working.
I downloaded a Firmware and bought a 80Gig hard drive and now I have over 600 albums at the tip of my hand dont carry any more type of Discs.

you can take this rout too and its not that expensive compared to an Ipod and the good thing about this is that I sometimes hook it up to house stereos or TVs and listen to my music.

i say go for the IPOD i have one on an ALPINE CDA-9813 with the ALPINE KCA-420i and it works wonderfully. I bought for the same reasons u are unlimited music control and i dont even use anywhere else I installed it in my glove compartment and there lies the IPOD ;) . also 90% of manufacturers create some sort of IPOD compatible item or feature
think about that its easier to get compatible product :D

Nothing yet. Here's the deal... I trusted someone with the Fleetwood to do a simple fix and it ended up in his possession for a very long time with no work done and I had to take it back in worse shape. During that time, my career advanced a bit, a big bit, and the Fleetwood is now getting a makeover. New paint, interior, stereo and whatever else I may feel like. So I took the interior out last weekend and #1 on the list is stereo. So I've got nada, all new.

I don't listen to the radio nor do I listen to satellite. Just my depressing, angry Seattle grunge bands from the early 90s. I'm starting to think all I need is an iPod, and a 1½ DIN screen to control it in my dash. Does someone make something like that?
