Hi Gang,

I want to put in a pair of subs but I am running into a problem. I drive my 9C1 about 200-300 miles a day for work. With that kind of mileage, I can not afford to remove my spare.
Does anyone have any ideas? I have seen several mentions of free air woofers but I have been told by several audio installers that they are not too impressive and the tubes simply stink.
I am not looking to blow out the back window but just add some thump and depth to my music. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would be greatly appreciative to hear them.
So you have a frame of reference, I am running and Eclipse 55430 head unit with Eclipse 5.25" Point Source and 6x9" Point Source in the stock locations. They are going to be running off of and Eclipse EA 3422 amp.

if your handy with a sawzall cut your metal deck lid then have a deck lid built.mine was $350.00 to get built.or just move spare to back of trunk build a box under the deck lid and you still have most of your trunk you would probally never put anything up that far in your trunk anayways.you could port through your stock deck lid also?just some ideas.

I was the same way didn't want to remove my spare tire because you know the day you take it out you will get a flat. What I have now and I'm very pleased is 2 old school 10" Pioneer speakers in an enclosure or small sealed box. If you just want some bang and aren't looking to remodel the truck go with a small sealed box with 2 10" JL WO or W3. Also depends on what amp will be pushing these subs. That's what I would do if I was looking for baby boom and keeping my spare tire in my car. I'm now in the process of redoing the entire system.

Thanks for your help with the subs. Do either of you have any pics of your trunk set ups? If so, I would love to see them. Thanks again for the info.

George,

I had an EA3532 (5 Channel) amp driving 5.25 and 6.9 Point Source all running off a CD5441 head unit. The sub channel on that amp could really only support a single Kicker Comp sub. I tried running 2 Kicker Comps but the single channel couldn't handle it. To me a single 10 inch kicker comp was just barely adequate at max volume to integrate into the rest of the system (and even then it was only barely adequate for rock music, and not stuff with more significant bass).

When I tried running the two subs, I had the amp mounted on the back of the seat (spare moved a few inches away from original location). I used two sealed "truck" enclosures for the subs, which were more tall and long as opposed to cube shaped, and could tuck them (with a slight angle) in-between the tail lights and wheel wells. The subs were facing each other. Fairly reasonable amount of trunk space remained without having to get custom enclosures built. These boxes were definately less than 1.0 cu in, probabaly close to .75 cu in each.

If you will be running the EA3422, then a pair of JL 10W0, 10 inch Kicker Comps, or similar subs would be the ticket. I think this would work well for your needs without being too little or too much. I don't think there is enough power there to drive a pair of JL W3's or Comp VRs adequately. One thing to keep in mind about the eclipse amps are that they don't measure their power conservatively. The power tends to be right on what they say it is (as opposed to amps that produce a touch more than what they say). You get excellent quality, clean sound out of Eclipse amps, but you don't get massive amounts of power. So, if you want to run a sub off an Eclipse amp, error towards a more powerful amp (or less power-hungry sub).

In the end I decided to sacrifice more trunk space (but still kept the spare) to run a pair of 12 inch Kicker Comp VRs. I also had to get larger enclosures and a significantly larger Eclipse amp to drive them.

Thanks so much for the information; it sounds like your idea is just the ticket. I was curious to know if you had any pictures of your trunk set up. I was checking out the picture in your signature but I could not make too much out of it. By the way, what Eclipse amp are you using todrive your Kickers? Again, thanks so much for the help. Originally, my upgrade plans were just to replace my old amps and subs with the 5 channel and pair of enclosed 10 inch subs I talked about earlier, but since that idea didn't work out as planned after I demo'd the system for a few weeks, I decided on the more substantial upgrade shown in the pics.

The smaller sub enclosures that were used for the 10 inch Kicker Comp's were in a similar position as the 12 inch Kicker Comp VR enclosures, only the subs faced towards each other, and the enlosures didn't intrude as much towards the center of the trunk. I also didn't use the amp rack show in the pick as the amp was mounted behind the spare. I wasn't using capacitors with the 5 channel either.

By the way, what are you powering your 5.25 and 6X9 speakers with? Deck power or an external amp?

Thanks for the quick reply and for the pictures. That is a very nice looking set up you have there.
As far as my 5.25 and 6x9's, they are currently running off deck power but they will be running off the EA 3422. I have not installed the amp yet. I figure that I will do the installation all at once when I get the subs.
I have to have as much trunk space as I can get for work so I am toying with the idea of mounting the amps on the underside of the trunk lid or up against the back seat.
My local installer has mentioned JL 10's and I have heard lots of good things about them. Were you satisfied with the 10's you initially had installed? I am not looking to compete with the car, I do not really want it to pound. I am more concerned with sound quality than having all the windows in my house rattle.
To compare, what is the volume of the boxes you have now (with the Kicker 12's)? What kind of power is required for the 12's?
Sorry about all the questions but when you are running on a budget, trial an error is a bad thing!

I moved up to the 12's becuase of the music I listen to. I wanted to get more bass extention without having to use a ported enclosure so it would carry a deep note and continue to hit hard.

I really loved the sound of the 10's with music that doesn't go much lower than say mid bass. Those same songs don't sound quite as good with the 12's as those mid bass now come across not quite as tight as before. I also feel like I need to play the 12's a little louder for them to be in their sweet spot. I'm kinda hoping a better quality sub may improve things in this area.

I'm running those Kicker Comp VR's towards the top end of their power rating, so I'm pretty certain I'm getting full cone displacement while being able to maintain control and damping . To my ears, it seems as though I'm getting as much as SQ as those Comp VRs are capable of giving. Each sub is getting 370 W RMS.

As far as volume is concerned, I have more than I need, but that was a goal of mine...to have a system that was capable of clean sound at a volume that was uncomfortable to listed to in the car. That still doesn't make it an SPL monster though!

I know you are on a budget, but you really really must listen to a PA series amp. The EA's are clean and smooth. At first I felt satisfied with the EA series amp I tried as it gave me more volume and cleaner sound than I had with the small Kenwood amp. When I wasn't satisfied with the subwoofer output, I went back to the installer to talk some options. One of the guys at the shop had a PA series amp running his front and rear speakers, but his 15 inch sub was blown. He let me listen to some of my music in his car and I was astounded! I thought the EA sounded good, but this PA was increadible. The sound was fuller and richer, and the bass was solid...all this without a sub to fortify the sound.

Take that money you were thinking of spending on the subs and spend it on a better amp...if that's an option for you. Kinda sounds like you already have the EA though.

I dont know think that mounting the amp under the trunk lid as a good idea. The trunk lid gets hot with the sun shining directly on it, and all that heat would go right into your amp!

Have fun with your stereo project. The pursuit of "good sound" can be very addicting at home or in your car!

Sounds like one of the baffle boards that HACK makes would be perfect for your situation. You can run dual 10's (or 12's I think) AND keep your stock spare all while not losing trunk space to big bulky boxes. The free-airs perform quite admirably as well.

Keep in mind that HACK is a well respected audio afficianado who owns his own shop and has won awards with his free-air setup.

You can only squeeze 10's in there, I believe the maximum measurement is something like 11.25 or so. Either way, 2 or 4 10's can do some impressive things. Part of me wishes I would have went that route.
