This is in my '92 Caprice classic. It doesn't smell like coolant and the level hasn't changed. It just smells like musty water. Any ideas on what it could be before I take it to a mechanic? The heater works fine as well, so I don't think it is leaking.

all i can think of is the heater core,but since you said its not coolant than im most likely wrong.Good Luck

Have you had rain recently? Lift the carpet on that side make sure the floor board hasn't rusted through. I don't know about Texas but up here in the North Country it's pretty common.

Speaking from experiences with my previous car (again!), I had water leaking in around the passenger door seal when it rained. It was a steady drip coming out from where the door and the dashboard snugged up together.

Right before I sold the car, I pulled out the stereo system, and when I lifted the carpeting on the passenger side to get the wires out, I found a small pond on the floorboard. Oddly enough, there was no rust, just a lot of water on the floor and soaked into the insulation under the carpeting.

So, I would check the door seals. Perhaps they are worn (or torn) and need replacing. Look around with a flashlight on a rainy day, or have someone spray water on the car while you watch from inside. I have seen windshields leak too, so keep that in mind as well.

Hope you get to the bottom of this!

Guarantee it has nothing to do with rain, snow, or coolant.

Rather, your AC system drain is clogged up. There is a hose on the passenger side firewall on the underhood side(or is SUPPOSED to be a hose, more like a 90 degree elbow). It can EASILY clog or fall off. When this happens, the water won't drain, it backs up, and it drains the only place it can....into the car.

Been there, done that, dry now


And before you say "But it's winter, I'm freezing my keister off and DEFINITELY not running my AC right now!"......remember that using your defroster also runs the AC compressor.

While you are at it, do the "hose" fix that is outlined on Rob Cheek's website. Costs all of under $1, and can help prevent this from recurring.

I'll bet you 2 to one that Ed's pegged your problem. This is exactly what happened to me last year. I un-plugged the line and resealed the "catch pan" (which is actually the bottom of the unit's plastic cover which is under the pasanger side dash) and the problem was solved. Haven't had a damp carpet since.
