I just installed the Pioneer DHP7400MP head unit in my car and I have to say, I really like it. The best part is it plays MP3's and I have 1 CD with EVERY Led Zeppelin song on it (The 10 disk box set), even Coda  . I am busy this weekend ripping my CD collection to MP3. Who needs a disk changer? :D

The mp3's sound great as long as the bit rate is 128 or greater. The only draw back is that when it scans the disk, it puts the tracks in alphabetical order, not the order that the tracks were on the original album. If you have an album like Pink Floyds dark side of the moon, you need to rename the tracks with 1. Speak to me-Breath, 2. On the Run, etc... before burning the disk, or else Any Colour you like will be first followed by Brain Damage. I rip all my songs at 192 bit rate, the file size is a little bigger, but that doesn't really matter when you can still fit the entire Led Zeppelin collection on a single disk.

I have the Aiwa cdc-mp32 which plays mp3 disks also. I love being able to put 100+ songs on one cd. I don't really notice the difference in sound between a regualr cd and an mp3 disk. It's worth the cost, and is still cheaper then a head unit and a changer!

Mp3s won't sound as good, but they sound pretty good, and yes the fact you can have like up to 160 128bit ones or some tihng is very nice

I have not been able to tell any diffrence in quality between a regular cd and the mp3's. My head unit was $234 on ebay. Not bad at all IMO.

tripitz: that is one sweet head unit
. I checked it out recently at a local electronics store. Does it have any problems or design flaws? I have a JVC KD-SH99 mp3 head unit. It and the Alpine CDA-7878 were the best mp3/CD units on the market so far. My unit has a few design flaws though. Here comes a challenger .

I only have the first four
. On the other hand I have almost all of Pink Floyd on another CD

71fleetside, mp3 can sound as good as you want them to. Theoretically, even better than CDs. It depends on how well you encode them. Most people will not hear a difference between a CD and an mp3 encoded at 190 kbps or above. I'm fine with 128 kbps. The biggest problem with mp3s is the delay between tracks, which occurs due to the time it takes to decode the first few bytes. My head unit makes a ~3 second delay between track. My home puter, with 1GHz processor, Win2k, and WinAmp, makes a tiny fraction of a second delay, but it's still audible when the sound is supposed to be continuous, such as in concept albums, trance mixes, and live concerts. tripitz, how does your head unit perform?

I'm not sure but a certain mp3 encode rate might be equal of a cd, bust most aren't, if you've ever looked at how they recrod stuff you can get a good idea how its hardly possible to really do any thing to it with out loosing a least some thing

It also does depend on your head unit and speakers to tell the difference, and mp3s sound better? due to processing and all sorts of fun things you can do to them, they don't really have a better edge by themself

I have the Aiwa cdc-mp3 in my winter car. I like it a lot. You can have folders and browse up to 6 folders deep (I think)

Can I tell a diffrence? Yup, but on bitrates less than 128. I never put it into the Impala because its only got 2V preouts :(

71fleet,
I have a very good stereo with kicker amps and speakers and the sound of the mp3's is great. If you can tell the diffrence, then you must have a calibrated ear.

MrSag,
The delay between tracks is the same on mine. I am thinking of recording "concept" albums as a single mp3 in order to eliminate delay between songs. My roomate recorded the entire pink floyd wall DVD with jet audio into a single wave file, then compressed it to an mp3.

Well I guess I pay attention I can tell the difference on my computer most the time, I guess you'd have to listen some to actauly tell except have you ever tried "Leader Of Men" by nickle back at 128-bit? I believe I had that song and it sounded like ass, but I have the album now and it sounds good, some songs where it takes out parts you normall don't hear can really mess stuff up, maybe its the way you have your stuff setup I'm not sure, but there is a difference, I know I hear it and lots of other people do, but it dosen't really matter if your happy with what you hear any ways right? so enjoy
I for one am really into the idea of 100+ songs!

I had my P7400MP ordered some two weeks ago from Germany, they will ship in another two weeks. In Europe, this unit costs 450 EUR, which is about 390 $. This is pretty high, even when I say that I will get it for 400 EUR, and Hungarian prices reach 500 $. But I think this unit is worth all the EUROs. I can hardly wait to install it.

My friend also ordered this 7400MP in his ricer Civic Type-R and he is wondering what colors the display has and if red or amber is available, as his white faced gauges with a tacho scaled up until 9000 or so are lit in redish amber.
