well i just got off the phone with reservations at Pocono Manor and was unpleasantly suprised. they asked me how many people would be in the room and i said i was bringing my wife and 5yr.old son. instead of the negotiated rate of $99.00 dollars for a "double" room i was told that double didn't mean 2 double beds but 2 PEOPLE. therefore because my 5 yr. old is the room the rate is now $129/night. when i questioned this she said it was the industry standard everywhere. i replied that is wasn't down here in the south to which she argued it was. in Florida, GA, even in N.C.. being a regional slaes rep i travel over, we go to FL regularly to see my in-laws and the SSHS ( another ISSCA event)is in georgia. i have never been upcharged for a 5 yr. old in any of these places ( although i have seen rates saying an additional $10 for each extra adult, never $30 for a pre-schooler) and frankly i think these folks are gouging us that want to make our families a part of mountain madness because they know we're locked in to the venue. i don't know who negotiated these rates but it would've been helpful to know this in advance if indeed that was the supposed price structure. my budget's tight as it is with 2 weeks in FL. just prior to the nat.s.
am i just over reacting or does this seem wrong??

Ed, as the guru i appreciate your evil genius, but the last thing i would want to happen is for them to call me on this or catch us doing something wrong and put a bad light on the group.
i just don't think this is right, like i said i feel they have us over a barrel. i guess i'll have to bite the bullet, or stay at the overflow, or decide that this has put a bad taste in my mouth and go to new orleans like the wife would prefer.

OK, the alternate hotel (Comfort Inn) shows to me to be $130.99/night for a non-smoking King bed with rollaway for the kid.

Holiday Inn Express shows (at best) $90 night BEFORE taxes etc. Keep in mind the $129/night at the host hotel includes ALL taxes. Sales Taxes plus Room Taxes up there are around $20/night per room (in other words, typical tourist area tactic of "soak the outsiders".....for sure, NOT an exclusive tax idea of just the Poconos ;) ).

In other words, you're not saving as much as you probably think to be at the non-host hotel ;) .

Also, quick search at sidestep.com (searches a bunch of travel sites for you at once) shows $80/night (BEFORE taxes) to be about the cheapest for a non-dump type hotel in the area. And most hotels are far enough from the host that you'll burn up the difference just in gas alone on the "daily commute" that you'd save ;)

Take it as someone who has attended, well, damn near ALL of these National Events (both before and with ISSCA). Stay at the Host Hotel or very close. Every time I did NOT do that, I regretted it.

alright Ed, i'll get up off my poor arse and make a rez at pocono manor...it still chaps me and no one can make me believe that the EXACT same room that 2 people could stay in requires $30/night more enrgy or clean-up for a 5 yr. old. and if it did, you would see my little boy sitting down very gingerly most of the week.

I always pay extra, (about $30 per person), at all the hotels I've been to for Impala functions. Atlanta, Tulsa, Vegas...
I see what you are saying about the 5 year old though. That's a bummer.
But it is a nice place and possibly worth the extra cash.

Pocono hotels cost more than most is seems.
My buddy had to pay $200 per night during the last Pocono NASCAR race for a normal chain hotel, (I forget the company).

Rus,

Ah.... there seems to be a disconnect here. I've asked the ISSCA lodging guru to respond to this. We were all just up there a couple weeks ago and the deal right from the saleman's mouth was:

Double = 2 beds in a room

Single = 1 bed in the room.

I did not hear him say anything about added people being added cost, but then again I'm having a really bad bout of CRS lately.

Wait until its clarified here... should just take an hour or two. I hope.

Made my reservation back in February for 2 adults, 5 year-old and a 2 year-old. Reservation receipt they sent me says 4 adults for $129. YMMV

All,

Well I must admit that this has been less than clear. Our ISSCA VP talked to the hotel today and the deal is that a single or double with one or two people, one or two beds is $99.

More than 2 people in a room is $129.

When I was there a few weeks ago I was in a 'single' room, and it had 1 queen bed. There was a room across the hall with a single king bed in it.

So... if you want a single queen/king or a room with two doubles or two queen beds, I guess you will need to be specific.

In the past our hotels only had two types of rooms. A room with 2 queens, or a room with a single king. Guess this being an older hotel they have variations.

I'd like to apologize for the delay on this answer, just wanted it accurate.

If in doubt about your setup, call the hotel and make it clear what you want.

Also, a few people have called lately and been told there are no rooms for Thursday night. Evidently the block ISSCA had on the rooms released 30 days prior to arrival ( 6-11 ). So if you called before that, and got turned down for the room, please send an email to your regional director, or post it here. We will work to try to get it straight.

At this point though, the hotel is booked solid for Thursday night.

thanks gerry for the clarification. however when i made my rez on 6/27 the folks told me there were 17 rooms left in the block. i wonder if there was that much of a late rush. i'll be happy to get back to commerce... 1 queen, 2 queens, 1 king, whole family...one rate!

I made my reservations sometime last week, and they had no problem with the rate or anything, I just said "I'm coming down for the Impala event" and the lady said "ok, $99 a room"...I gotta call back and clarify that I only need 1 bed, but other than that, I thought the people there were great.

I don't think anyone should be putting this shiat on ISSCA ..they negotiated some great room rates...which is a small part of the overall event planning they've put in place.

Personally, I've managed many events, non auto, and it seems no matter how hard you try to make it right and as seemless as possible, there are areas you can't totally control.

Knowing how much work is entailed, my hat's off to ISSCA. Don't beat them up on the small stuff.

But have at it with the Hotel ;)

hmmm..i don't think i ever put any shiat on ISSCA but thanks for your admonishment.
what i was doing was making folks aware of what the hotel was doing. in at least 2 instances now, things that some board members and certainly the general membership did not know. the only ISSCA Sanctioned event i have attended previously was SSHS as stated and i have attended all 4 and soon to be 5 of them. these issues have here to fore never arisen and therefore were an unpleasant suprise. while i understand in the big scheme of things that $120 isn't a whole lot, the point is that i'm sure my family will much spend more than that on host facility related activities (so they'll make money on my family) and in no way could i justify that kind of surprise upcharge for a pre-schooler. i have 2 businesses that i work for myself in and take my $$ somewhat seriously, however if this is just a bunch of shiat i'll gladly accept you sending me a paypal donation matching the extra and delete this thread. ;)

i'm tired of dealing with the hotel who basically called me a liar when i told them this wasn't the SOP at the other ISSCA events i've been to.

that being said, yes, thank you those involved for the effort. back on the same day i let everyone know about this i did make my rez, so ...hope to see you there.... in my rearveiw.

For what it's worth, I got my reservation squared away, but the lady on the phone said they didn't have any King beds...maybe she just meant they didn't have any left for the week we'll all be there, it's ok though, they do have queens.
