I was having trouble with my power steering pump, several turns & I lost power steering. I installed a new power steering pump over the weekend. Tuesday I noticed it was whining & after several turns of the wheel I lost power steering. I once again installed a new pump, this one runs quiet, I did the wheel lock-to-lock 20 times bleed, however the car was not raised up when I did this.

Once again I seem to loose power steering after several turns of the wheel. Any chance this could be the gear box? I had a mechanic look at it initially & he said it was the power steering pump & wanted $400 to replace it! That of course led to my replacing it twice... :(

How do I diagnose a bad gear box?

If it is the gear box any chance it could fail completely (lose of steering control)?

Thanks

How did the fluid look the first time you put a new pump on. If you have shrapnel in your fluid from an box that that's bad... it will eat the pumps up.

Thanks Rustic,

When the steering first got bad (prior to new pump) I flushed the pump with 5 quarts of new fluid. It was a dark red/brown but I did not see any metal in it what so ever.
