reman PS pump leaking...rebuild it myself.

So the fitting that screws into the back of the pump is leaking.
What is behind there? An o-ring?

It is not leaking from the high pressure hose fitting/o-ring.

VERY annoyed, typical reman crap strikes again.
Would rather just fix it, than remove and have to replace all over again.
Can see the drip in pic below...

Yes there is an O-Ring that goes into the fitting/pump.

FYI, I have my old pump out just collecting dust, and if you want to I would sell it to you for the core fee of $15, and then for the cost of shipping (~$26) as well, I could send it off to Lee Power Steering who I had rebuild my pump earlier this year.

This way you could still drive your car, as is, and then just have to wait for Lee to rebuild the unit.

I may take you up on that.
Going to remove the fitting, and see if anything obvious jumps out(other than the spring).
Maybe the o-ring is just bad? Doubtful with my luck though.

Took fitting off...rusty/dirty.
Cleaned it up, replaced oring, reinstalled.
Refilled PS, still leaking.
POS is coming off and getting returned.

ATSCO reman is crap!!:mad::mad:

So, scored a PS pump from the JY last week. Tore it down, and ordered new seals/bushing.
This one while a little dirty inside looks like it was good, and I probably could have just run it?
However I can't leave anything alone, the PS pump on these things is a pain.
I figure a rebuild by myself if probably 99% better than the crap they peddle on us these days.

In case anyone cares what is inside? They are pretty much the same as larger saginaw pumps w/ reservoir attached. They even use the same parts.


I polished the shaft, and cleaned the wee out of everything. Bushing is chilling in the freezer overnight.
Tomorrow I'll cook the pump in the oven, and drive the new bushing in. Hopefully anyway...no press.

PS pump rebuilt...hopefully it'll be better than the POS re-manufactured one?
Nobody to blame but me if it isn't though:grin2:

Good luck on the DIY rebuild. Have to agree you likely did the better job than the reman shop did.

I put 3 in before the 3rd one worked. first 2 made noise and slipped right out of the box

LEE is back in biz and will be where I send mine if it should shiat again. My OEM 120k original the shaft broke at the rear

recommended you change out pressure & return lines as they break down "inside" the rubber portions with age.

They(hoses/lines) are already new. As usual my back is not cooperating, so dunno when I'll get it replaced.

Pump I rebuilt is installed, no noise like POS reman., AND it DOES NOT leak!
So once again if you want things to go right, do it yourself, because the crap they peddle as re-manufactured is pretty much crap.
I should have just rebuilt the damn thing myself instead of trying to save time with a re-man?

Tonight I'll pay a visit to AZ to get my $56.99(pump) and $33.00(core) money back.
What a stellar waste of time, and money that crap was.
So annoyed, probably could have been driving the car long ago had I not replaced the pump with this junk.

The Atsco (aka Duralast) was noisy, leaked, and always had air bubbles in fluid no matter how much I tried to bleed the system.
It appears that the pump was actually leaking from the rear cap that is held on by a large snap ring.
Thought it was the removable fitting on rear, that was rusty/nasty when I removed it, but it was not.
No matter that fitting should have been spotless, and the fact that it had rust on it, really pisses me off.

I'd bet $ all that got replaced was the front seal, and then it got painted. Some lazy ass douche on an assembly line NOT doing their damn job.
