I have a 96 classic with 130K miles on it. If you don't know the steering ratio is garbage (the steering period is garbage), it takes about 4 turns from lock to lock. And it is starting to show signs of wear. I want that impala/9c1 quick steer ratio. There is a junkyard down the street from me saying that they have the whole 9c1 system, the column, box, rake n pinion, etc. for $200. I need some advice, i don't wanna get ripped off. Do i need this?

There are quite a few threads that take on the steering gear question--here's one in the "sticky" info at the top of the Suspension Forum:

I say don't start with a system from a wreck or parts with unknown history that are already AT LEAST 10 years old. Go to one of the companies that offers what you're looking for, or get a reman unit from a parts store, at the least.

I'm partial to a shop in Sun Valley CA, Lee Manufacturing, http://www.leepowersteering.com/

There are others, including AGS. located in Texas http://www.agrperformance.com/ (available through Summit), Detroit Speed & Engineering, now located in Mooresville NC http://www.detroitspeed.com/ , and a place in Michigan, Turn One http://www.turnone-steering.com/
