My 9C1 seems to have a problem picking up slightly weak (and sometimes even strong) radio channels. This problem has existed since I purchased the car over a year ago and does this regardless of what head unit is in the car (stock or Pioneer DEHP7400). It's really starting to get annoying ... the weirdest thing is that when I put my hand close to the head unit or if another car parks close to mine, some of the weaker channels come through much clearer. On a side note, my antenna plug (the one that connects to the back of the head unit) seems to have trouble keeping the male prong "centered" in the female end on the head unit ... could this be the culprit? Thanks.

I could be wrong but did you use an antenna adapter, I remember using one on mine. I do not have a part number but you can buy them at Walmart :(

Yes, I did use an antenna adapter for my aftermarket head unit ... but the problem appears to be the stock antenna plug's male prong touching the outside edges of the plug :confused:

hmmm...not quite sure what you meant exactly in the last post. but are you sure you got the right antenna adaptor? GM loves to use the tiny ends and always have to be adapted up to the "normal" size...

if it's fitting loosely it's either the wrong adaptor or something is wrong with the plug itself.

OK, we've got an update to clarify things a bit more ... first off I managed to rig the antenna jack up in a way that I can obtain clear signals. The catch is, I only get clear signals with the car off and the ignition back ... as soon as the car is on, I seem to be getting some interference in the form of engine noise (just a guess). What could possibly be causing this and is there any proven remedies? Thanks.

are you running an external amp by any chance? If so try rerouting your RCA's away from any power wires or relays.

also, does this interference change frequency with the engine RPM? or is it just straight static?

could be alot of things but the general cause is the same...electrical interference by something emitting electromagnetic noise.

is the antenna and the antenna wire stock? Or has it been changed at some point in the vehicle's life?

Buy a new antenna. Yours may have a broken wire or something along that line. I have replaced them before in other cars, it's not that hard.

Not the mast, but the stuff inside the RF fender. anther thing you could try: There is an antena plug behind the underhood fuse box... check the connection there... posibly try a new antena at that point too.

9C1s came with radio noise suppression straps. These are braidded copper straping to groung the hood, body, trunklid, exhaust pipes, etc. Are these still in place?

it changes with RPM...it's not a whining noise by any chance is it and not static?

i've never run across a vehicle that had problems with static changing w/RPM's


try checking what booth suggested before you buy a new antenna. also, since you said it seems to clear up when you put your hand near it or get near other cars leads me to think it IS a loose connection somewhere. Reason being is that your hand and/or other cars are acting as another antenna effectively making your stronger.

if you really can't find it, drop by a local stereo shop and ask if they can take a look at it. Our shop charges $40/hr for shop time and we have a half our minium. They should be able to drop your dash and pull out your radio and check all those connections in about 30 minutes. There's only a couple screws that hold the dash piece and radio and all in so it shouldn't take them long to gain access to all the wiring...tracing it out would be the longest process

Hmmm... static frequency changes with rpms

My 93 did that too, so does my friends 2001 GTP and my cousins 96 Dodge Stratus. On Monday, I could ask a buddy of mine who works at a car stereo place if he knows what can be done to fix it.

It is probably ignition noise. I would suspect that the antenna wire is not grounded. It has been a while, and I dont have the FSM handy, but it should be grounded at one end. Can not remember which end though. Verify with a vom that it is grounded though. If it is not, any noise will be inducted to the signal wire. Most of the time you only want it grounded on one end, not both to advoid any pesky ground loops.

EDIT: I mean the antenna sheild wire should be grounded. Not clear in the first rendidtion.
