I've noticed that my 96 RMW has started feeling like it has a miss, but this past weekend we took it on a trip and I now think it might be trying to jump in and out of O/D?

bumping it down into 3rd seems to clear it up (if I'm not fooling myself?)...

Anyone experience this? and what can I try to remedy it?

Also, do these cars have on-board diagnostics? I just got a 'service engine' light come on...

I poste this earlier...but Do not see it...
Basically "SPRINT SPRINGS" refused to ship my order claiming that since I logged in as owning a Carprice wagon they Refused to send me the 2" 3" drop Sedan Springs...I got a phone call 5 minutes ago from them and convinced them that YOU GUYS ON THE FORUM KNEW BETTER!!!!.....It's only like $250...but I hope you did not guide me into a big headache...I assured them that WAGON OWNERS HAD ADVISED ME THEY USE THESE SPRINGS ON WAGONS...which is contrary to what SPRINT CLAIMS...

ANYWAYS I BOUGHT THEM....I HOPE IT WORKS OUT..Like the Sprint Springs guy said "THOSE GUYS ON THE FORUMS TYPICALLY KNOW MORE THAN US"...
Regardless...
ANY INPUT FOR ME FROM SPRINT SPRING USERS ON THIS PURCHASE???THEY GAVE ME ALOT OF STATIC ABOUT USING THEM ON A WAGON!!!!......Is There Anything I need to look for or modify or is it as basic as a simple spring swap??????

I experienced similar symptoms with my 95 Fleetwood a couple of months ago. At light throttle on flat road, it felt like the torque converter was rapidly locking and unlocking, causing the car to shudder. Like yours, it went away when I pulled it down into third gear. I thought it was developing a tranny problem, so I told my mechanic buddy about it. He does a lot of late model drivability stuff and he said the problem I described was not the tranny. He thought it sounded more like an electrical miss. He asked if I’d noticed any other odd things and I remembered having the headlights go dim after backing out of the throttle a couple of times. From this info, he decided to check the battery and alternator. His handy-dandy tester told him I had flaky connection somewhere, which we tracked down to a corroded battery terminal. We replaced the terminal, rechecked the battery/alternator, and found both were strong. I’ve not had any more of the shudder problem or headlight dimming since.

You may also be a little low on tranny fluid. If it's close to the line or just at it try adding half a quart (had this happen in my 94 on the way back from the track).

DEPRESSION*ICR* Good job :D ;)

O.K., mine was doing to exact same thing a couple months ago. I'm at work and don't have time to search but find my question in the drivetrain section on T.C. shudder.

There is an additive that cures this right now. Add it to the tranny and presto, the shudder is instantly gone.

It's called shudder something or another. If you can't find it, I will in a day or so. I did have to order it off the internet as I couldn't find it locally.

Yes, these cars do have on-board diagnostics and your "Check engine light" is telling you that a fault code has been set. Read the code and it may tell you the problem. You'll have to find someone with an OBD2 reader.

Thanks for the info.

Any of you in Birmingham, Alabama with an ODB2 reader? if so, feel free to contact me... Is that something that you can rent?

They're $98 at WalMart - well worth it if you're going to own a 96 & up anything.

I keep one of these plugged into my RMW all the time. Pulls codes, tracks mileage and gives me lots of stats on the car. Very nice although not too attractive.
Not cheap though.

ok.

Got the OBDII and read the codes and they came back as

0171 and 0174 (I believe).

which translated to: running too lean in bank 1 and bank 2.

Any suggestions as to what to check next? I'm assuming a fuel filter would be the very first thing to change?

</font>[/QUOTE]How accurate is the mpg readout? Does it work well pulling codes, etc? Where did you buy it?

I've compared the mileage from the computer to the old method of dividing the gallons I put in by the miles on the trip odo. It's pretty accurate. Well let me qualify that. It's pretty accurate if you allow the tank to run down between fillups. If I fill up with half a tank remaining, that seems to be less accurate than if I wait 'till less than a quarter tank or the low fuel light comes on.

No problems pulling codes at all. I've used it on a Saturn and Geo as well. Got the codes and cleared them thus turning off the CEL.

Bought it from their web site, linked in my post.
