Well guys, at 78,000 miles (or 130,000kms) it's not surprising that I need new shocks for my 1996 Impala SS. I've read all the appropriate threads and found them extremely informative, thank you all.

Just to confirm my impressions. The Monroe SS P/N 550012 (front) and 550013 (rear) are very acceptable replacements, but are not as good as the Bilstein P/Ns B46-1104 (front) and B46-0929 (rear. The Hals are the best for those that like to hammer their cars and need the adjustments available, but are very expensive. I'm not that rich, can barely afford the Bilsteins. but I'm tending to those over the Monroe, primarily because of the lifetime warranty, which Monroe do not give in Canada.

Couple of questions. Are my impressions correct? Also, are both the Monroe SS and Bilsteins direct replacements, or are adaptor kits necessary?

Oldtimer,

Yep, the Bilstens & Monroe SS Shocks are Plug & Play.. No Modifications or Kits needed.. :D

I understand about the Warrenty Concerns..I am supprised that Monroe doesn't have a LLT warrenty in Canada.. Maybe I'd better not tell them I drive up there too..

Put the Monroe SS's on the SS (that is kinda cool :D ) and absolutely love em'. Night and day compared to the stock units. Can't compare to Bilstein's (never used them), but for a total of $120, I have nothing but praise.

FYI - I would also recommend doing the ZQ8 bumpstops since you are in there anyway. Another $20 for a great product that greatly enhances the ride... Plus, it only takes a couple of minutes per side...

The Monroe SS is as good as the Bilstein, from a performance point of view, this coming from people who have tried both. The only unknown is in how long they will last. If you get them from a store that sells them with a lifetime warr., it's a moot point.

I've had mine nearly a year(wow! been that long...) and have put about 15k on them, still doing great.

Thank you guys for the replies.

Some info that may be useful for other Canadian members. Most places I spoke to have no idea what they are selling. Many of them did not even know if the prices they gave me were for a pair of shocks or for just one!

Monroe dealers are relatively easy to find. The cheapest I could find in the Toronto area was $59 each for front and rear. Typically I was quoted $65 front and $75 rear, per shock. Nowhere could I get a lifetime warranty.

Bilstein does not have a specific Canadian centre. Their Head Office gave me three (3) main distributors for Canada:
ADP tel 1-800-567-7559
Essex tel 1-905-477-7736
Keystone tel 1-800-257-7190

Essex and Keystone are wholesale only, but will give you names of retailers they supply. (Canadian Tire is one outlet, it's a special order. Good luck to you with CT, I've never had much success with them.)

ADP will sell direct and I got the lowest quote from them. $128 each for the front and $96 each for the rear.

Other retailers quoted me $160 each for front and $120 each for the rear. Just for laughs I called the GM dealer and was told the P/N had been discontinued. The replacement part from AC Delco was $250 each!

Lenny - I got them a while back (4-5 months)from Rock Auto for like $30-$35 each. I used one of the other member's "discount codes" for an additional 5% off. These are posted now and again and Rock Auto sends them to customers every couple of months... I think that my actual total including shipping was about $145...

Keep an eye out for one of the members posting one of the RA discount codes. It worked perfectly.

I just looked and right now, the fronts (#550012)are showing at $33.77 each and the rears (#550013)are showing at 38.92. That would be $138.11 (plus shipping) for all 4 with the 5% discount... Great deal!!!
