Picked up a 1994 9c1 formerly a code enforcement car from the city of Brewton, Alabama... Just wondering how many actually had crank windows. I will need to replace the driver and passenger door panels at some point.... Just seems like it will be a little odd since I haven't seen many with crank windows.

Not really sure if anyone could answer your question on "how many" cars have Crank windows. Maybe someone has a set here in the color you need. Be aware that the 94-96 panels look similar to the 91-93 panels but they are slightly different I believe due to the dash.

If you find the Panels with the Crank are a tough find, might be a good excuse to add in Power Windows. :) I doubt the wiring will be there and you will need to find a donor car for the harness and possible window regualtor and Motor. Not sure what else may be required, but it would seem to be a fairly nice project to consider.

You could also consider PWR Window panel and cut the hole yourself for the crank assuming the panels are the same minus the crank hole. It would be a shame to cut up a perfectly good door panel though. :( At least on the fronts which have the window switch on the Bezel so nothing to cover there. The rear Panels would be different and have a rectangular opening in them for the window switch.

I've added Pwr mirrors and Seats to my car using factory parts from a Donor/Junkyard car and had to make up my own harness to run between the pigtails. It wasn't difficult and schematics are readily available.

Another thing to consider if/when you remove and replace your door panels....look at the thread on the Window roller replacemnet. Might be a good idea to check those carefully and consider replacing the dog bone style while the door is apart.

The rear panels are the same, the fronts are completely different. On a crank car, the armrest/control panel does not extend as far forward as on a power car.

Common? Common enough. Many municipalities ordered crank cars. My 94 OPP 9C1 was a pretty good stripper. Cranks, no posi, no radio, no cruise. Expect to find them in Light Adriatic Blue...

The difference in the panels is the top front section. If you can remove and replace that section, you can make the older ones fit the newer ones.

I have a set of older ones that I repaired. You may be able to repair the lower section of yours, just like building a plastic model car. That part is styrene, and can be repaired with MEK or MEK substitute.

I'm looking at doing this on a 9C1 I just picked up, I have a donor wagon with all the power options.
Rear doors on sedans and wagons the same? Since there are no window motors in the hand crank doors and they are riveted in, I'm thinking of swapping the harness that I need from the donor car and also just change the whole door. It'd be ALOT easier.

This is a really old thread you have resurrected.


The front doors on the wagons and sedans are the same, but the rears are different. The difference between the sedan and wagon door panels is the top rear. The rear wagon doors are not compatible with the sedan. The wagon rear door interiors are different as well. The top rear has a larger cutout, and may not cover the end of the glass reveal. 91-93 front interior door panels are different in the front upper quadrant. The rear interior door panels are the same physically, but the colors are different after 94, and can be different in some 93s.


If you want electric windows, all you need to change are the regulators, the interior panels, and add the wiring. The donor regulators can be bolted in, rather than riveted. The wiring is part of the cross car harness, and you need to swap out the entire harness. It should be a plug and play. You may need the wire protectors that go between the door and the body for all four doors. The cross car harness for the wagon is a little different than one for the sedan. I suggest that you get a harness from a sedan. You may also have wiring for the seats, mirrors, courtesy lights, and electric locks. If you get a harness with provisions for the remote locks, you can install the module for that as well.

I already swapped in the interior lighting harness and swapped in the upgraded rearview mirror with map lights and lighted hooks for the back seat. I was going to take out the harness from the wagon for everything wired to the doors and swap it over and either just hot wire it in with a fuse, or attempt to install the factory setup in the fuse panel. The second option looks difficult from a glance due to the wiring being tucked in at the back of the dash, not very accessible. My problem is that I'm trying to make everything from the wagon work so I can just swap as much as possible. It's going to be very difficult, and expensive, to find a set of good door panels in tan for the rear doors.

Are you looking for cloth top or vinyl top door panels? Do you have the pull handles or just the inserts?

Not many at all. I had a heck of a time finding one to replace a missing one on my car; it took a year to find one. Most of the later 9C1s had power windows.
If yours aren't totally torn up, you should definitely try and save/ re-use them.

I have an extra complete set (front & rear) in light brown, if anyone ever needs them.

I was wrong on that, I checked them and they do have the pull handles.

You have a complete set of tan door panels for a sedan? With vinyl or cloth, and with pull handles or without?

One of the first Interior Mods I added to my Caprice were Pwr Seats and did it all with Factory controls and harnesses. Didn't have a Donor car sitting there that I could pull a harness from to swap the entire harness. If so, may have reconsidered and swapped the entire harness but like you noted that is still one heck of a major Job/PITA. But when at the Jyard and looking at the mess of wires in that overall cross connect harness, I just decided on the spot that I would cut the pigtails and fab up my own harness.

Unwrapping the Main Harness to even begin to separate the Seat Wires was a Sticky, Gooey mess with the original tape on the factory harness. It was also obvious that the Seat wires were so intertangled in other wires it was useless to continue. Sooooo, couple of snips with the Wire cutters and some Seat Control Bezels and was on my way to fabbing up my own harness. >:) If you look at the Seat Circuit for example, most of the wires run between the Door Control Switch and the Seat Rail and then just had to tie in 12V and Ground.

Like you, I added pretty much ALL of the interior Electrical items and as you know there are no harnesses hidden away just waiting to be connected. I added PWR Seat, PWR/Heated Mirrors, Lighted Rear Coathooks, Autodim Mirror, lighted Sun Visors and Lighted Door Panels which my car never had. Even added the little light from the early cars that shines down on the Door Switch.

In all cases, found it easier to splice in certain parts of the harness that weren't tied into the major harness (harness above headliner) but for other circuits like Pwr Seats and Mirrors, I found it easier to get about 12" of pigtail harness and create my own Sub-Harness to route between switches and Components and then just tie in 12V and Ground. In most cases I was able to connect to the correct directly to the correct Circuit Breaker or Fuse. All wires were rigidly wrapped, soldered and then heat shrunk while the entire harness was then wrapped in electrical tape to assure no bad connections would show up years later....so far, so good. :wink2:

Vinyl, without door pulls, and manual windows. My car ('91) had the very light "camel" colored interior, and these are darker than that.

That's exactly the panels that I have now, except blue....hhmmm. I would prefer the vinyl, and the darker panels would actually probably not look bad. Hmmm..I could still add the power windows with these too...any pics?

You can not add power windows with the manual window door panels.

I thought, by looking at them, the opening was the same for either. Guess I didn't look too closely. :(
I may just put the wiring aside in case I eventually do this and maybe just swap to vinyl tan hand crank door panels for now.
