Has anyone ever replaced original sphere with the updated one?
Noticed slight play in mine when tilted up much less when tilted down. I noticed a wear mark where spring sits.

I'm assuming the coil spring blue one is the new style?
I have done an awful lot of columns in my life and never seen the coil type.

Tilted up or down the issue should be the same if it was actually the joint as turning the wheel rotates it so the loose spot would keep changing.
Loose is usually all the hardware coming undone inside.
That said , if they completely changed the design something must be up.

Small thing , if you are taking it completely apart note the ref mark on the base of the tube by the pinch bolt and the line on the top.
You can put the joint together 180 degrees out.

My hardware was fine. I replace shift lever spring, shift lever& tilt lever with aftermarket billet. Most of my play is from shaft under hood but that sphere had a very slight amount as well from the spring wearing. Someone been in there before.

One of the corvette or Camaro sites listed that sphere as an update. Had GM part number

When I had everything apart I pulled the turn signal switch wires too much and messed up the Delphi one I put in 2 years ago. Standard was all I could find Sunday and it’s not as stiff as I like

Echo that. If doing a column is new to the original poster (my FWB was the first sphere I ever did),there are lots of parts and positions to keep track of. Older columns were much simpler, with less stuff crammed in there. There are some good videos on youtube. I used the new blue sphere and it seems like an improvement over the old one for keeping tension in the joint.

I had this thing apart and together at least 5 times from putting things in wrong order and I did put the sphere joint 180 out too… I can now put it together without the diagram or video 😤I wish I knew about the blue sphere 2 days prior. I’m going to order one after I build a steering shaft. I broke a used jeep shaft and a new one… that’s over half price for borgeson parts. I’m too heavy handed with the hammer
