When swapping stock steering wheels for a monte carlo or similiar wheel with radio controls how do you know what module you need for it to all work. Been looking at www.Pac-audio.com. Do I just enter the info of the donor vehicle to figure out which module to buy? I know the model/brand of the radio plays into it to. Planning on upgradeing the wheel with controls and the deck at the same time. Thanks for any help fellas.

Buick Rivieras of the mid-late nineties had steering wheel controls with a double din Buick head unit.

Which may not help, if you are going for a 1.5 din aftermarket head unit.

Wish I had known that! Riv's are a rare find in parts yards, unfortunately. Wonder if the controls are an add-on or require a specific wheel, since everything else looks just like the wheel on my RMW, right down to the wear on the finish!

The 97 Lumina wheel on my SS was plug n' play with the OE radio. No idea what the interface requirements are if the radio is changed to aftermarket.

Yeah, I got a wheel with the radio controls off a 99 lumina that should work for a stock radio but I cant find any modules that allow the steering wheel controls for a lumina to work on an aftermarket radio. Guessing I have to go back and get one off a monte.

iowa, I bought a MC streering wheel and interface module from a local guy out of his 96 Impala running a Pioneer head unit. It all worked well. I will have to go dig around and find the controller I have as it is not installed yet. Just make sure the aftermarket radio you have/get has capability for wireless remote control. The module I have is a universal type, and from reading online is kind of a PITA to program, but once done, works flawlessly. There was a kinda indepth discussion a couple years ago or a little more (pretty sure it was post-crash) about how it all worked. The Lumina wheel should work exactly the same as the MC wheel. Does your lumina wheel have the same 2 pin (maybe 3 pin, I need to look that up again) connector as the MC wheel?

I'll dig around later today and post the brand and model number of the one I have that I know works.

Here you go. It is only about a year ago and not as in-depth as I remembered, but the basics are covered. MC wheel is a 2 wire connector, use a PAC-SWI (the universal model) interface if your head unit is wireless RC capable. I also found a post from HACK from a couple years ago that stated Lumina wheel will work as long as it is the same MY range as the MC wheels that work. Double check your Lumina wheel and make sure the radio wiring is a 2 pin connector.

You talking about the connector that comes out the bottom of the steering column? Mine was cut off by the junkyard but it has 4 wires. I checked Pac's website and cructhfield and neither list a controller that works for the steering wheel controls of a 99 lumina. Both show ones that work for 90s monte carlos though.

Cut off connectors will be a challenge, but doable, still. The four wires should be two for the air bag and two for the radio controls. If I can find my MC wheel, we can walk through some diagnostics and determine if they are the same. It will just take an ohm-meter and a few minutes.

Thanks for all the help. I was not clear in my last post. The air bag connector is not cut off, just the radio one which has four wires from it.

Oh. Interesting. Does the Lumina wheel have cruise control buttons (or some other function)as well or is it just the radio controls?

Just the radio controls. It looks just like the monte wheel. I would have assumed gm used the same wheel for both cars but for some reason the pac controllers say they wont work with lumina.

Ok from researching this topic I found multiple threads telling where to hook in the four wires from the steering wheel controls into the factory radio plug. My question then is on the pac controllers do they tap into that wireing as well or tee into the factory plugs almost like trailer brakes? I know one wire goes to the actual after market radio but where does it get the inputs from the steering wheel controls?cwm3
