Send to me, either here or via email, a description of the 1 or 2 most stupid things that you do at the drag strip, while racing or while in the lanes.
This is for a top 10 "most stupid things we do while at the drag strip list" for In the Staging Lanes

Nabil Guffey gave me the idea to make this list. We all do funny things, (really not stupid but just funny).

I'll break the ice by going first.
During a bracket race, I always have to push the ash tray back in. No matter how hard I try to force myself to just look at the track and finish my run, I always end up pushing the ash tray back in. It's stupid that I cannot finish the run with the ash tray out.

If you don't want to post here, email me at [email protected]
I'll take 10 entries for now and put them in my column.
thanks, Karl

Some of these are already posted, but some have my own spin on them.

I actually look at the ashtray after the run to see what my 60' times are like at the tracks that don't post them during the run(did that make sense?). I will work on a marking system on the side of the ashtray, just got to keep it calibrated somehow...

I also open the windows once I go through the traps to help slow the car down, like the little bit of wind resistance will help any on a 4400 pound car...

I lock all my doors before I get into the water box. I guess I don't want them to fall off during the pass....

I have done the burnout in reverse trick every trip to the track! On the plus side last night was my first trip so I have only done it once and hope to not make a habit of it. I did the mash the gas before lifting the brake too
. Also forgot to take my road trip/cargo(boxy 9C1) springs out of the rear these are stiff and tall, I have a nice low soft set of 96 Roadmaster springs in the garage that would have helped my 60ft. times a lot. I think I can overcome my many mistakes once I am more comfortable at the track.

Karl, the last time I was at the track (which was my first time), I stabbed myself with my knife. Damn near took the tip of my index finger off. The tip was flapping in the breeze like a woman's skirt down by the bay in SF.

Anyway, I wrapped my finger up as best I could, and kept on racing. I needed stitches but it heeled ok on it's own.

Yeah, so I ran pretty damn good that night so i'm thinking of stabbing/cutting/lacerating myself everytime before I race, in the hopes that the loss of blood (which was alot, right Jason?), and faint feelings help me go faster! Maybe it was the pain, or throbbing that made me get that good reaction time or something. LOL! Who knows.... :D

Ok, here is one thing I really do before I race. I don't think anyone mentioned it above, but I didn't check. You won't be too surprised at this either. But what I do before I race is check out the ladies. I can't help it, those damn ricer boy's have some pretty hot gf's! I gotta give em credit for that. But yeah, their always hanging out by the end of the lanes, and I just have to look to see if any of them are looking at me, or looking at what a real car looks like. Most of the time I make eye contact with em and smile. Sometimes I've lost attention of what's going on, and the race track Nazi's get all pissy and start yelling at me to pull forward. Sorry, what can I say, I'm a guy, their girls, it's only natural, LOL!

At Sac raceway they have this REALLY hot chick that works the lanes and tells you when to move up. Sometimes I forget that I actually have to race and cannot stop and talk to her. :( Man those chicks are HOT! Now you got me thinking about em. Time to go to the track again soon!

Hope that helps Karl. Not sure if that fits your criteria. But it's pretty stupid to be checking out chicks when I should be preparing for the race.

one time, i pulled my accessory belt off. got all greasy, had to fight the car off the track and ran 14.65. ten minutes later i put the belt back on, which made it easier to drive and turned a 14.63. same night i left my seat belt off, got to the 1000 footer before i noticed it.

I generally take my car apart a week before the big event at the track and then I don't have it back together in time to race it...other things I do:

Close the ashtray in the staging lane.

Drive around the water box, dump the clutch quick to scrub the crap off the tires and then close the ashtray again.

Stage and check the ashtray one last time really quick.

Launch and keep my right hand on the shifter...at 6K put the clutch in and YANK the shifter back into second and dump the clutch all faster than I could ever describe.

Take my hand off the shifter to push the ashtray in AGAIN.

Make the 2-3 shift...trying to do it as quick as the 1-2...wind up kicking the dashboard with my foot as I yank it up off the clutch pedal and then looking around inside the car to see if anybody saw how dumb I was (I know cause someone is DEFINITELY gonna see me while I'm in the car doing 80 mph somwhere down the track).

Close the ashtray one final time as I finish the run and slow back down...soon enough I'll get to add in the 3-4 shift and another ashtray routine.

You guys with the auto and ash tray problems, I don't know...but with the stickshift...I cannot make a 2-3 shift with it open without smashing my fingers between the shift ball and the ashtray...so I've gotta make sure it's closed...oh and then there was the time I was really nervous and for some reason I didn't really press the gas pedal down as I "launched" so all I did was dump the clutch and stall the engine...it was pretty dam funny to run a 16.5 @ 96 mph though.

When I saw this thread I was thinking about how you knifed yourself in the stageing lanes. And yes it was ALLOT of blood. The finger looked so bad that I got worried. I swore he was gonna bleed out right there!

I like to forget to roll the window up.

I run the heater to cool things down when hot lapping.

Pull up to the staging lanes and they remind me to roll the windows up.

As I'm rolling the windows up the lights start...

1.2 RT...
