EDIT Update: June 5th. Bry Herter wins Super Pro sponsored by Mechanicsville Performance
Bry Herter wins the ECIRS bracket race sponsored by ISSCA.
Mike Kozloff driving Bry's 94 SS wins the Super Natural sponsored by Ellwein/Engines.

Greetings fellow Impala SS racers. For the east coast people this is a must attend event....the very last East Coast Impala Open at historic 75-80 Dragway Monrovia Maryland. The inaugural ECIO held in 1998 set the Impala racing world forward by having the first heads up racing event. John Rafteseth ran the historic first 11 second 1/4 mile that day. Since then we have about 40 more people in the 11's.

This is the last ECIO because this is the last year of operation for the historic 75-80 Dragway. The owner is an NHRA Hall-of-Famer, Bill Wilcom. He sold the track due to personal health concerns. He reduced his schedule this year and deleted all Sunday racing, ACCEPT for the last ECIO which will be June 5th. (Thanks Bill).

As well as bracket racing and heads up racing, we have a nice grass hill to park and gather on and it's a comfortable place to enjoy good looking fast cars.

ISSCA paid for the bracket race winner's wall plaque and the heads up winners each receive a trophy supplied by 75-80.

EDIT: "any car" is defined as a 94-96 Impala SS. All other cars are case-by-case. Good looking LT1 powered Caprice/Roadmaster/Fleetwood cars and Wagons are generaly accepted. See me for the go/nogo.

Heads up classes will be just like in 1998. Super Pro, (any car with power adders)
Super Natural, (any car with NO power adders).
There are no other restrictions what-so-ever. Just have an NHRA legal car for the ET that it runs. You think your car is the fastest in the world? It isn't fast unless you bring it here and prove it. No weight limit. Bring on the big blocks and tubbed race cars.

And like last year, we will have a bolt-on 350 class. (the closest of all heads up racing).
Bolt-on cars cannot run power adders and they have to have the stock 350 LT1 engine and stock cam and the heads have to be stock accept you can have better valve springs and roller rockers. No weight limit. You can gut the car and weigh in at 3000lb if you want. That would be cool.

So for the 8th and final ECIO we will have 4 racing classes

ECIRS Bracket Race sponsored by ISSCA
Super Pro Heads Up race sponsored by Mechanicsville Performance
Super Natural Heads Up race sponsored by Ellwein/Engines
HUBO Heads Up Bolt On race sponsored by the Impala SS 1/4 times page

Sunday June 5th, Gate never closes so come early. 9am is the official time when the track opens. Qualifying at 10am. Elims in the afternoon.

I second Karl's enthusiasm, even thou I have only been associated with the ECIRS for 3 years I can say that 75/80's history does bring great memories and thoughts of the great races who have past through it gates. This track is an ICON of the ECIRS along with ETown. 75/80 will be missed for sure. :(

Maybe we can replace 75/80 with another track like our newest event at Mason-Dixon, but it will never be the same.

Thanks Karl for all your hard work over the years supporting the ECIRS and introducing us to great tracks and the history of the sport.

Only one other bummer about this year is that the Muncy drag is on the same day. If not for that we'd be drawing all the fast cars to the last of the first.

Mason-Dixon sure would be a great substitue.

I'm going to try my best to make it down there... with or without an Impala in tow
I need at least one more blast down 75/80 before it's gone.

Here is a midsize thumb of the award we presented to Bill Wilcom last year. We gave him an ECIRS wall plaque with our thanks for starting a fun trend with the Impala SS heads up racing.
Bill also is a founder and pioneere of bracket racing from many years back. He also started all Ford and all GM events and things like that back in the day.

I wasn't around back then but I recognize Mikey T (top left), Big John R (top left next to Mikey) and it looks like Karl bottom right. Perhaps Gary Cardarelli front row left? How am I doing so far?

Did I mention...DeBlaz IN!

BTW, you should see this wagon now! Skip went BERSERKA on it, he shaved it, put in suicide doors, and just generally went crazy on it. From all accounts, it's gorgeous! I am sure pics will surface soon.

And another historic photo just found!!!

This is it! The 1st Impala SS qualifying round!!! Big Daddy vs future ECIRS Champ Mikey T.

Champ, you got some right on that photo.

It's Mike Trusinski, Big Daddy John, Bruce ?, John Thorn, Then lower row it's Clyde Cobble, Paul Kemlage, Charles Ruse, Karl Ellwein

Big Daddy won the peoples Choice award, (he broke valve train during qualifying). Mikey T. won the Super Pro. Charles Ruse won the Super Natural and I don't see Gary Cardarelli in there but he won the bracket race.

I have that photo in a nice 8x10 that someone made a few copies and sent them to me with no money up front
I don`t remember who that kind fellow was but it just shows how even at the very start of Impala racing it was, and still is, a bunch of great folks getting together to share a great sport
I wish I could attend the last 75/80 hosted race but will be in Canada.

Champ Mike, we will miss you. What da heck you doing in Canada eh?

I wish I knew the owner of that photo. He or she took some good ones back then and let us have them.

Anyone have the full size photo of the "quick 4" ? That's the photo of the 8 people. I remember it better now. It was only the qualified quick 4. So the back row is the quick 4 power adders and the front row is the quick 4 natural. I lost the full size digi copy of that photo in cyber land.

I will be in Canada with a bunch of other great folk at this event: www.avscruiseniagara.com/

I might have a digital pic of the group. I will have to check. I know I printed out a copy so I must have it saved someplace ;)

I found some cool pictures.

Rafteseth in 1999

Bill Wilcom, (sitting) in 1999

BBHP #1 Owned by Josh Korsower, (ran 13's with the 6-speed and heads-cam). Now owned by Nab Guffey.

2001 ECIO winners, Steinke, Stone, Herter (all very famous people now). Herter now owns Steinke's car called Snowflake with the meanest-baddest 355 LT1 in the world.

The first ECIO trophy logo.

And I FOUND THE BIGGER PHOTO of the 1st quick 4 qualified heads up field in the history of Impala SS (94-96) rracing!!!
