What shape is your collapsable intermediate shaft in? The rag joints could be part of the problem. Jeep Cherokee (boxy ones '93 and earlier) intermediate shafts are a cheap fix. Check them for play in the universals before using (they will click when twisted, if worn). It is a bolt in after loosening the sliding shaft. Even a worn one will be better than the rag joints. If you have a substantial budget, there are other options: after market steering box, and collapsable shaft. If you really want to spend some money, I saw a rack and pinion that could be adapted.
