I was wondering if anybody can help me with this problem .i have a habit of grabbing my wheel for support when exiting the car. when the wheel is in an up right position.the wheel will break loose into the fully down position.i'm not talking about a lot of pressure to make it move either and it happens infrequently i'm trying to break this habit ,anyone experience this in their b-bodies and could lend a hand with possible causes.

First of all I have repaired thousands of tilt columns over the years. Mostly from theft recoverys. If it won't hold when pulling on it, it needs new parts. The 2 parts that pivot will need to be replaced. One part is called the tilt housing. That is the upper part. It is expensive. The lower part bolts to the lower mast jacket tube & doesn't move. It has the steel pins in it. It may just be one of these but I don't think you could tell which one just by looking. Probably the movable top part. The expensive part. Isn't that how it always is?
Try to find another column but my experience is that they are going for a high price too because that is what is broken in a theft. Any other tilt column from the same general year should fit. The parts inside should fit is what I mean. Not the complete thing.
