Tires

Why the preoccupation with the "65" ratio. They are very tall. Over 29" for the 235,and 29.5" for the 245. The 275/40's on my SS aren't even 26" tall. Stock size was 27" tall.

Tires

Guess I don't see why one would want tires so tall, beyond being better in the snow.

Had I 17" wheels, 235/65R17 is EXACTLY what I'd use - WAY more choices than 255/60R17, or 275/55R17.

245/65R17 are between 29.5" & 29.6" tall, depending on who made them. If you aren't getting ANY tire scuffing against the wheelwell/body with 235/65R17, it still doesn't mean you won't get any with 245/65R17. You may have to put something between the springs and their resting points to give you the necessary clearances?

For the record, someone (ONE; wish I remembered who?) here on the ISSF has used tires somewhere between 30" & 31" tall, but he had custom wishbones and adjustable trailing arms.

On condoms, less rubber is better.
On tires, more rubber is better.

Wagon's rear wheelwells chafe at tires wider than 245. I can ONLY get more rubber by going taller.

If I drove more enthusiastically, or drove for prizes, 255/60R17 or 275/55R17 would be made to work by whatever means necessary - if not EVEN WIDER; more rubber the better - but I'd still daily drive 235/65R17 [especially on a wagon, since nothing wider than 235 fits in the wagon's spare wheelwell].

Besides snow & rain, other major benefits include additional defense against bad road maintenance, and less fear of scraping the sidewalk when a thoughtless passenger opens their door.
If I lived where those functional concerns were moot, I'm positive I'd be more motivated by aesthetics.

I was just pricing out some 235/65/17's for the SS rims for my wagon. The roads here suck to bad to not have some sidewall.
