I was wondering what other year 4l60e transmission would work in a 1994 Impala SS? Or would it be better to get the original (to my knowledge its the original) rebuilt?

If you can afford the downtime, I'd rebuild the original, unless it suffered a catastrophic failure.

Plenty of good starting reads in the sticky linked to above.

I always prefer to have my case rebuilt by a specialist. Swapping another with unknown history will get you right back where you are now sooner, rather than later. Plus, the in/out is the same. Good time to upgrade that torque converter to a quality 9.5" one if you haven't already... Assuming 3.73 gears...

I fully agree. Buy a used transmission and you are getting something that is a total unknown and even if good at the time could go at any time.

+1 on the 6 speed,i love hammering the gears, all 3 years had different transmissions which are not interchangeable, mostly converter lock up,i put a 94 trans in my 96 and it would throw a code going up a long grade everytime unless i took it out of overdrive, just keep that in mind when looking for a replacement,a lot of tranny shops dont realise this and it will cause problems, thats why it better to get yours rebuilt
