hey guys, new to the forum and i just got a 95 Impala ss from a friend. well the transmission is acting up as most do. here is the problem. it shifts from 1st to second just fine. then when it is supposed to go to 3rd it acts like it goes into neutral. i belive it is slipping pretty bad. so i have a few options. 1. go to the junk yard and get another for the time being. the good thing is that it is Half price day this weekend at my local junk yard so the transmission would only be $100. or i can rebuild it with a couple buddys that have a little knoledge with transmissions. may take awhile and may work but not sure. this route is $140 for the rebuild. now for the real questions. if i can get it from the junk yard what year and what cars will i find this transmission in that i can do a direct replacment. the easy thing would be to find a 95 impala ss that has a transmission but everyone knows that its not that easy so i need to prepair for the worse. any help would be great.

PS. i was out trying to diognose the transmission and it hit 50mph and the lower ball joint snapped here are a few pics.

This guy is a friend of yours? Did you know about these issues when you bought the car?

What you should do depends on a lot of different things. When you say that your friends know about transmissions, do you mean that they've built a few successfully? If not, then that's probably not a good option. The problem with a junkyard tranny is you don't know how long its going to last. People are gonna jump on here and tell you not to be a cheapskate and invest in an expensive tranny. This would be a good option if you have the cash or you plan on modding but i'm guessing that 2k for a tranny isn't in the budget. Your best options are to pull the tranny yourself and take it to a local shop for a rebuild. This option should cost about $700-$900. Another option is to get a used tranny from a car that you know ran well before it was pulled. This option will run you around $300. You already know what a junk yard tranny will cost and the "friend rebuild" cost. If your friends really know what they're doing and/or your willing to deal with the drama of the rebuild not going well, this might be your best option. Having said all this, the only options that will bring any kind of warranty will involve professionals and a lot more cash.

front end will need to be rebuild depednign on the dmg, do you have insurence?

The chevy gods arnt happy with your sreen name so theyve passed the word onto your car that it should find a new owner.....

But seriously if your realy straped for money id go with one from the junk yard, they usualy have a short warranty so if you do decide to go that rout make sure do install right away and get it runnimg so if it doesnt work you can take it back.

i got mine from a junkyard 2 years ago and still going strong

well i have several friends that have done one or 2 transmissions sucessfully. so i think this will be a good idea to do plus from what i understand it is not terrible to do. as you said i am not looking to spend that much money as i am a student and have other thing to pay for rather thatn a $3000 transmission. as for the other options i am still not sure because if i can just get it running i can try and sell it as this thig is nothing but problems..... its just very discourging i am sure you guys know what i mean. its an awesome car but too much work and not alot of spare parts as well as not a huge following where i live.... that i know of. as for the damage there was not much looks like a dent in the finder (could be pounded out) and the ball joint... as well as my new shocks are now scratched. o well thanks for the input if anyone else has any ideas i am open to suggestions. also if anyone is intrested in a 95 impala it is now for sale. best offer!!!

Well it is good to hear that you guys understand a budget.... most other forums that i go on always say to spend spend spend. sometimes i dont think people know what budget means.

on another thought .... does anyone have the old sticky for the T56 conversion?

You can get a replacement transmission out of any 95 Chevrolet Impala SS, or Caprice. 95 Buick Roadmaster. 95 Cadillac Fleetwood.

I wouldn't. There are more place's around that rebuild these things for a living that can't get them right !! Get one at the yard & keep your friend's as friend's.

I believe you could use one from 1996 caprice/roadmaster/impala/fleetwood but would have to swap tail housing.

Do you have any friends that work for fleet managers or dealers, especially used-car dealers? Find out who they use- there are bound to be a couple shops that do this work all day, every day- find a recommendation, and then go talk deal- cash in hand is a good bargaining device-

If you can find a shop that used to fix the local police cars, you should be golden-

aka Shane; and he's our tranny guy here on the east coast. I guess I should say THE tranny guy to those that know him. Many of us have watched him rebuild a 4L60E at night in a parking lot on a car hauler trailer half asleep. We thought it was the beer.....

I personally have watched Shane in action. What caught my eye during his parking lot OJT show was how he inspected worn parts after they came out and his attention to detail during the reassembly. The man is extremely good at what he does.

I realize this doesn't help much with you on the left coast, but at least you can communicate with him if necessary for advice/do's/don'ts and guidance.

And you really should drop that 4-letter word from your name. Why stir the pot from the git-go?

Good luck with your ride - I would plan to spend a weekend on a creeper with an inspection light checking everything on the underside front to back. This after replacing all the steering linkage downstream of the steering box. And ball joints, bushings, bearings....
