Just wondering, do you use the key to open the trunk, or the remote? I had a similar issue with my 95. Key to open never a problem, dash button then it wouldn't want to relatch to close it unless I tried a few dozen times. Could be a similar issue with yours. Try removing the remote release temporarily and see if the latch works properly.
