Check the loop thing that the latch hooks to also. I was having a problem with mine and it turns out that the plate it is attached to was coming off. There was a crack in the metal just above the filler neck and one whole side of the plate that attached to became disconnected and the trunk wouldn't latch.

I could never get mine to align when shut, then i realized the same probleb metal where hoop was attached was cracked and was lifting up.
