I'm looking to upgrade my stock audio system with some good sounding speakers but want to retain the stock head unit, yeah its kinda dumb but I want to keep the stock look.

I was thinking of getting some nice 6x9 for the rear and 6.5 for the fronts and running them off a 4 channel amp, maybe 50x4 or something to that effect. While converting the output of the stock head unit to line level with one of those speaker to RCA converters.

What you guys think? Recommend any brands or go with a different setup? I'm pretty much open to anything except for replacing the head unit. Unless someone out there knows of a aftermarket headunit that looks and fits like the stock unit?

Thanks!

How much do you want to spend on speakers? that will narrow down your choices.
Then find an amp with speaker level inputs rather than a speaker to RCA converter

Maybe $400 total... $200 for speakers and $200 for a amp... doesnt have to be high-end, just something nice.

i'd check ebay, and get a decent set of front components. doesn't have to be a real expensive set. the rear speakers should be easy to find on ebay, or a local store. then i'll go with t jbl amp, they are cheap, and sound good.

I have JL Audio 6X9's - brand new, the best model they make - for $269 for the pair, but that is full retail. I might be able to do better. Email me off digest if that sounds like something you are interested in. JL is known for subs, but is up and coming in the market for internal speakers (I run them myself).

While JL -does- make nice stuff, that's more than double the cost of a set of Alpine R-series 6x9s... the JLs are unlikely to sound more than twice as good, especially for the setup you're planning to run.

Alpine 6x9s for $114.99 a pair

While you're over there, the Alpine R series 6.5" component speakers are $149.99 for the pair and also excellent:

6.5s for $149.99

My SS is running the speakers listed above off a 4-channel Alpine amp that is $228.99 at etronics (MRV-F340) and it takes speaker level OR line level inputs:

I replaced the stock 6x9s with some JVC CS-V6930 6x9s for $50 shipped
The fronts are JBL GTO6425 4x6s for about $50 shipped also.

I would like to put a small amp on it, but it's not something I have to do. The improvement from the speakers was incredible.

Oh sure. They might be out of what he wanted to spend. I do carry a full line of products though. Name your price, and I will find it for you - and good quality.

Thanks for the replies and links, they all sound good, just need to decide on what to do now. I do have a pair of old Pioneer Premier 3-way 6x9 from my old car.

But I hear people love their Alpine stuff so most likey I'll be going that way.

Either way I'll let ya know what I do and I'll try and take pics of my setup when its done.

Thanks again!

They have some great amps I have a 4 channel V12 one of the first models of that line and it has been going strong for the last 6yrs.
You can check ebay for some MB Quart speakers and get you 6.5" components up front and some 6x9's also for about your price range, maybe. I would go to your local Best Buy or stereo shop and check out how they sound which ever brand you go with.
